Are Mac's Worth It?
 

I was configuring a MAC on the apple.ca website, I knew they cost a little more, but %#$^ Damn, these are expensive computers!

You guys that have them, are they worth the extra cash?

I configured it with all the bells & whistles, but man, $24,000???

Goodness! A fully loaded Mac Pro? Whatcha going to do with it? If you're serious about a Mac Pro, I would wait a bit longer, as they're supposed to transition to some new Intel processors soon. Hate to see you spend that dough and not have the latest and greatest.

and what you copied and pasted has alot of worthless junk or stuff doubled on the list so im just guessing you clicked everything that popped up for upgrades or something you saw on the site

if its serious, i love my mac much more than my parents and sisters dells. mom and dads computer has xp, sister has vista. the mac is much easier to use once you learn to use everything. takes a lil time learning the different buttons and functions but you learn as you go. parents are probly buying a mac fairly soon since their computer is getting really old and outdated. everyone i know with a mac won't go back to a pc

I'm really just tire kicking, I had no idea these things could cost that much.

I am buying a new pc soon, Dell Studio XP is what I've got it narrowed down to. I'll spend about $2,000 when it's all done, but that Mac for $24,000 is something else.

No you are right, I just maxed out the options just to see what it would cost, I wasn't expecting 24k, wow-wee, that's a lot of coin.

Yeah, what do you need that much HP for? That's a lot of processing power there. I don't have a MAC but I do have the Canon printer. It is an incredible, major, biggest, without exception, extraordinary, piece of crap I've ever owned. If you like replacing ink cartridges bi-weekly regardless if you use it or not and get screwed to the wall by that freakin' chip on the ink tank, then you'll be in love with the Canon printers. I print black text only and half the time the printer won't work because a color tank is empty....even though you can look at the thing and see it's half full. The SOB won't work. It won't fax, won't receive fax, won't scan, won't do a freakin thing except say you gotta replace the cartridge that you don't need. Buy anything but a Canon printer. Buy a pack of pencils before buying a Canon printer. It'll save you money on the Excedrin you're going to be eating like candy. Yeah, the Canon printers are REALLY that bad. Figure a color tank for about every 60-75 pages of black text at around $15.00 a tank locally. You can get them cheaper online. Also, the generic refills most of the time won't work either. Don't ask me how I know.

The reason I like Macs is merely because of the following reasons:

1. They resist viruses, especially when surfing the internet. I love how I can mistype addresses in, and then go to some rogue page that has spyware trying to download onto my Mac and it's designed for Windows.
2. They are more secure because they run a Unix platform.
3. They start, sleep, restart, and shut down a heck of a lot quicker than any Windows machine.

There are many more reasons... but I love my Macs.

I've been using Macs professionally in the desktop publishing bidness since the first 512 fatmac was introduced in the 80s. Would have nothing else. As noted earlier you don't have crashes from spyware, viruses and all the C**p that latches itself on to every PC out there. They're fast, efficient and run a much more stable OS than Windows. Yes, they are more expensive but WOW - I don't think even I could price out a 24K computer. Still, they're worth their price.

The other comment above is true about new machines coming out but it seems everytime I buy a Mac a new model is out within 6 months so I wouldn't necessarily hold off a purchase for that. Talk to a pro at the Apple Store and they can tell you if something new in your proposed purchase is coming up.

$24 grand and I won't even be able to update my Edge with it? :coffee:

And it's funny that the F150 ECU has the legendary PowerPC microprocessor running it... :lol:

One of the professors here at UT bought a fully loaded Mac Pro to do molecular modeling on. I convinced him to download an encoding program I used, just for fun. Let's just say that that beast could decode a DVD is no time at all. When I decode on my MacBook, I think it's fast, but boy, that Mac Pro is like lightning.

what are you going to be doing with two quar core processors, you using this as a server or soemthing.

2. They are not.
3. Yes, though my laptop w/ Vista is much closer than previous versions.

Habibibibibibi... Macs are nice. They function well and look all purdy doing it. They are fairly easy to learn, but no easier than Windows. The hardware is well designed and usually very fast (ie, the Apple engineers do an excellent job at optimizing). It this worth all that extra cash? I personally do not think so. They are not that special and they come with their own set of headaches.

Not a server setup, more of a CAD engineering station. 2 30'' displays, 8 cores...

Can you imagine how sweet internet porn would be with (2) 30 inch displays?
