i disagree with you on the flag issue, its part of our history. the way i see it, its like our secondary flag. theres a lot of families who fought for what that flag stood for, granted it may not be a perfect thought in your mind but i can understand the flags meaning to some families.

in a word i guess, heritage.
And for the same reasons can you understand why this symbol, that had to do with their heritage, would be upsetting?

I am proud of my German Heritage, but you will not see me flying a **** swastika flag. Be proud of you southern heritage but considerate of others.

The confederate flag is always a touchy issue, my sister put a small sticker of one on the back of her car and gets glares. Its the only Honda I have seen with a Confederate sticker

I just want to say, that I feel it was wrong for the people to "go off" on you as you state only after seeing your rebel flag. However, being in the african american way, I can relate to/understand the reason(s) why they did. To the african american that symbol, rather flag is a symbol of hatred towards african americans, lynching, and slavery. You have every right to be proud of it, display it to your liking, but DO NOT deny the negative associated with the flag. As another poster mentioned, you have to take the good with the bad that comes with that flag.

That old lady, in her lifetime, may have first hand knowledge of the bigotry associated with your flag. Cut her some slack, she's an old lady. I'm very glad to hear you were respectful although they were not.
I have a twin Welcome

However, being in the african american way
First off welcome to the site. Just a few points Id like to add to the mix. About 5 years ago, when I was in HS, I dated a black girl for a few months. People constantly talk about the crap that black guys get for dating a white girl, its nothing compared to this. They say whites are racist and against dating the opposite race, every black person we would walk by in the mall, movies, etc. would stare and comment about how that it wasnt right and she should be with her "kind". Everyone always focuses on how whites are so racist and intolerant, people should look at the other end of the spectrum, its far more intolerant.

Why do people still refer to themselves as african americans? You dont see me calling myself a german/irish american. im not saying they should call themselves black, perhaps the gov't can use a fancy word like they do for whites with caucasian.

Lastly, why is it becoming more prevalent that blacks refer to whites as "cracker"? Do they actually know the etymology of it? And how is that not construed as a racial remark when they call whites that?

most definately, but to the degree of starting a scene about it? no. we as american people should really take a step back and leave eachother alone. i mean its totally f'd up when neighbors call the cops on eachother because of the stupid crap thats none of their business anyhow. i mean really, how far can some peoples nose get into another persons business for no reason? i dont mean watch some guy beat his gf/wife and not say anything, by all means level the guy then call the cops

what happen to common sense?

im glad someone else points out how they think the white population is actually more tolerant than the rest. i dont understand why so many blacks or mexicans start spewing their remarks, then if you say anything at all your racist... i dunno about you but thats wrong.

I also see that you are from Chicago. I was born in Melrose Park and lived in Elmhurst until I was 12 years old. Go Bears and Cubs!

Now I understand that I have absolutly zero knowledge of how that flag makes AAs feel, I just don't understand. Slavery is over, was it a dark and tragic part of American history, yes. But I'm not sure what else we can do to try and make up for it, and no matter what it will not be enough.
Grandpooh said it very well, so thank you.

By "we", I can only assume you mean "Us white people".

I can tell you what "we" must do. We must forget about it. I do not owe ANY black person in this world a damn thing other than my respect for being just another human being like myself.

And to the OP, you are just as racist as the Old Black woman that you hit. Don't kid yourself.

Granted, I can be considered racist myself.... but only to the ignorant majority. I see black people everyday that are worthless pieces of crap. But I see even more whites that are just as bad or worse.

But if I speak out about the worthless white people, I'm only "speaking the truth". Blacks, "Im a racist".

Racism is a worldwide issue that we are born into. We are all genetically predisposed to see differences in people. Whether it's intelligence level, hair color, eye color, attitudes, or even skin color.

It's when you treat people in a rude and "ignorant" manner simply because they are a different color than you is when you are a racist. Most racist are ignorant and "dumb" people anyways.

As I stated earlier its not the Confederate flag. It was NEVER officially accepted as the Confederate flag.

The flag was first brought out as a battle flag, replacing the old stars and stripes due to it closely resembling our national flag.

I agree with most of what you said. ..
Lazy people are lazy people no matter what their skin color is. Just because you point that out does not make you a racist.
Views such as this are whats wrong with our country.

Yeah, the truth isnt always pretty. Yes a minority group might have to actually earn respect from those who founded this country and account for 75% of the population.
