Last time I checked, they play against everyone in the league not just their division.

I might be an exception to that. Grew up In Nebraska, but I love the Wings. I picked them as my team on my Sega waaaaay back in the 90's. Followed them ever since.

That same statement though would also hold true in most cases to my beloved Cornhuskers... When the Huskers were rolling people for some 30+ years (kinda like the F-150 if you think about it) people loved to hate them. Now, people still dog on us just because they can. We're gonna be back to top notch form...

I will clarify that statement; I was not comparing cup titles to WS titles because to my knowledge there is not another pro team in any sport that has won their perspective championship as many times as the Yankees have in baseball. The Montreal Canadiens are close. I was suggesting that like the Yankees the Red Wings are seen IMHO as that one team that people love to hate. Now I'm sure in the day it was, "Those F'ing Canadiens!"

Nvrenuff does make a good point. 3 of the Pacific division teams made the playoffs. Do the math.

I am just pointing out that 24 of 82 regular season Wings games are against crappy teams like St Louis, Columbus and Chicago. It is a bit easier to pick up points than say if you were in the Pacific or Northwest divisions where you have 3 or even 4 out of the 5 teams who are playoff contenders.

I really have no interest in who takes the cup now because my team only won 2 games since the trade deadline, but they did beat out the wings first round last year in the playoffs .

Yah I know, living in the past, but its all I got until next year.

All I have to cheer for now are the players and teams in my playoff hockey pool.

It's not the Wings fault that Chicago, St Louis and Columbus all stink...

I completely disagree. The Pacific division has the 2nd and 3rd worst teams in the NHL and the Northwest has Edmonton, the 3rd worst in the west, and Calgary who the Wings are beating 2-0.

Look at this link and the points that both Detroit and Nashville racked up from wins in their own 'Central' division as compared to the top two teams in every other division vs their own division, that is the point I was trying to make. Detroit and Nashville both have over 20 wins against other central division teams. All it takes is one more tough team in your division / 8 more games that aren't as easy to take away 2 points from and the overall western standings can change quite a bit.

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. The Wings would pretty much suck if they played in any other division.

Whatever makes ya feel better.

Seeing how I'm orignaly from Michigan I have to go with the Red Wings all the way. But if they can't make it my back up team is the Nashville Predators. I was at game one the other night as one of the big bosses came to town and bought a bunch of tickets for the Predators so a bunch of us from work went. It was a good game even though the Preds lost in double overtime.

Well since were throwing out arbitrary stats trying to make one team seem better or worse than another, try this one on for size:

Detroit's record
50-9-13
.610 winning percentage

record against playoff teams
21-11-5
.568 winning percentage

Dallasota's record
50-25-7
.610 winning percentage

record against playoff teams
23-15-4
.548 winning percentage

So based on this, Dallasota has a rougher time playing against the better teams than Detroit does. Does this really mean anything? No. You can throw all kinds of different stats out there to make one team look better or worse, depending on your motives. Detroit didn't make the schedule. They just play the teams on the schedule no matter how good or bad they are. If they had to play more tougher teams than they did, would their record be worse? Maybe. Would they not make the playoffs? No.

The only thing that matters now is the playoffs and the team you're playing at the time. A hot goalie can make the best team look totally frustrated and change a series. Detroit knows this pretty well from some past experiences.

completely agree

Although Detroit still isn't gonna win the conference.
I 'm sticking to my original prediction and going with Vancouver(Van is my underdog surprise team with the hot goalie), with Vancouver vs Buffalo for the cup. Buffalo wins it.

My guess is I'm not making many friends in this thread with my picks.
