It isn't necessary to live in DC northern VA.

There are plenty of contractors in the area in Maryland that pay the same.

Trying to avoid the argument: I'm a Network/DSL guy for the Big Blue Q. And yes, I still play with POTS lines.

Can't avoid the argument: I'm one of the two non-union guys in a Union shop. And I have one of the two best productivity/quality records on the crew.

As far as unions go, I believe certain SKILLED trades deserve to make the money, like electricians, welders, etc. Its when unskilled workers get paid as much as an electrician that bothers me and really makes a mockery of the skilled trades and unions show their ignorance. One good thing to remember is the union doesnt write your paycheck, you pay them...
As far as i know shoveling sand takes just as much effort as pulling wire. Electrician, a skilled trade. J/K I do a little more than shovel sand. i build scaffold, cut with a partner saw, and also install custom fireplaces. Some of the fireplace surrounds cost upwards of $250,000 hand carved straight from Italy. A laborer in chicago gets paid 31.55 and is worth everypenny.

There is more to being an electrician than pulling wire. I wouldn't say it is really what I would consider a skilled trade, but by god you better know your sheet. Have you ever sat down with the NEC? I have, and it is way more than I can consume to become an electrician. I work part time on some saturdays for an electrician. It is a father and son team. When the son wants a Saturday off they call me. I do all the labor while the old man sits on the back of the truck and tells me how to do it prperly. It is all grunt work, but I don't care. The knowledge I gain is worth way more than the $30 an hour cash that he pays me.

Anyone who thinks a licensed master eletrician is not a skilled job is an idiot, plain and simple. Im not talking about pulling wire, Im talking about industrial electrical contracting. Im also not talking about residential wiring, thats easy. To follow NEC codes while installing MCC equipment, PLC's, and switchgear is a skill that requires years of training and experience. I personally am not an electrician, I program, install, maintain, and troubleshoot motor control circuits, HMI/PLC process control systems, and power switch gear.

As far as a laborer making anything over $20/hr, heres my thinking. If anyone with a pulse can walk in one day and do your job with no training or experience, then you shouldnt be making anything near $20/hr. I dont care how expensive the equipment you are installing. I may have made the mortar to lay bricks on a $500,000 home, but I should still get paid labor wages because its a thoughtless easy job.
