Im an electrical engineer/supervisor mainly maintaining and installing process control systems and PLC's.

As far as unions go, I believe certain SKILLED trades deserve to make the money, like electricians, welders, etc. Its when unskilled workers get paid as much as an electrician that bothers me and really makes a mockery of the skilled trades and unions show their ignorance. One good thing to remember is the union doesnt write your paycheck, you pay them...

Don't worry about the good ol" Unions as they are doing their damn best to send as many of their "union" jobs overseas...

Those with "real" skills will get paid for those skills, it's called the market place, those without skills, like assembly line workers, well, they may be making some good money now but soon that job will be paying what it's actually worth ($8.00 an hour) and someone that don't speak english will be doing it within the next 5 years or so...

I had a good job and lost it due to internet surfing,

I'm now a Quality Assurance Product Tester for Depends, adult diapers.

Yes, it's embarrassing sitting around all day in an adult diaper but, the pay is ok because it's a union job.

No leaks is a good day.
A bad day is laying around with your feet in the air waiting to get changed.

I've got a damn rash and I hate my job!

VP, Information Technology for a government defense contractor.

In my spare time, I am a consultant for Shelby Automobiles in Las Vegas, inspecting the current CSX Cobras manufactured in Mexico.

Are there really that many jobs which having a security clearance is the problem? If that is the big hang up, maybe I should relocate, if the pay would be that much better.

In this neck of the woods it is a ton.

We are close to Washington DC and have a lot of contractors in the area. If you are in IT you have to have clearance, usually secret or better to get the good jobs paying serious loot. Even the consultants pay more for people with their clearance.

Personally I think it is a jobs program for former military personnel but that is another issue.

I can get one if I take a 40k pay cut for an entry level job while I wait to get my clearance....no way am I doing that.

Hehe, well since I'm military (guard), I guess I shouldn't complain about a jobs program for us I'll look into it. I would have a really hard time going to the metro DC area though... The pay would have to be ALOT more.

As far as the taking a pay cut while waiting for the clearance... it took about 8 months to get my secret, and another year for my TS/SCI upgrade, so yeah, it probably wouldn't be worth it for you (in the short term anyways).
