Well the data from the Census Bureau to the Department of Labor shows the correlation between advanced education and higher earnings.
In addition I would argue that a four year degree is more important now than ever before. In the fifties and sixties one income in manufacturing could support a middle class family. Employees in the Automobile or Steel industries, without a degree, made a good living. As we have shifted to more of a High Tech economy the majority of higher paying jobs require a degree. It is unlikely that you are going to get a good job at Intel without a degree.
Even in the Service and Food industries the upper management positions require degrees. If you spend any time on Monster looking at jobs you will see that a majority of the high paying positions require a degree.
Of course there are trades that pay relatively well and some business owners that do very well without a degree, however, on average you are much better off with a Bachelor, Master or Doctorate degree compared to simply having a High School diploma. While it may take a few years to pay off school debt for the majority of people it is clearly a worthwhile investment.
