Second of all you do have the option to cross train into a different job. Why you like the KC10 so much is beyond me. Maybe you like refuelers. I don't know. I guess a KE/KC 135 would even be worse. I was stationed at McGuire and March AFB, Ca and I preferred McGuire. But then most of my child years were spent in Burlington County so I was a little biased. I did not like California at all. I complained about how much I hated Tinker AFB in OKC but didn't realize how much I really did like it until after I left. I didn't like Keesler either. But of all the places I thought I really hated it really wasn't that bad because the people (GI's) made it fun.
Now for the gun laws. They do suck. When my kids were younger they were up at their grandparents and my mom let them shoot her BB gun. On they way home I stopped at a KMart in Millville NJ to buy them a pellet gun. That is when the nightmare began. I couldn't buy one without a "firearms ID". The lady at KMart said go to the police and they'll give you one. Well it wasn't that easy. I had to pay the State Police $100 to get fingerprinted. I told them I wanted to buy a Crossman pellet gun and not the Stealth bomber. Well the firearms ID was another $15 on top of that. But I had to wait not 3 months, but 6 months for everything which was much longer than allowed. But it was me against the state. So while I'm talking with the State Trooper I tell him I don't know why all the trouble for a pellet gun. Weell this lady behind me said "we don't want guns in NJ". I turned back to the State Trooper and told him I wanted to buy 3 Handgun Purchase permits. Another $15 each. But it was 6 months until I got the Firearms ID and the 3 Handgun Purchase permits and I went out and bought 3 handguns. And no I never did buy that pellet gun. A friend from work had a Firearms ID and bought the pellet gun for me. By denying me a pellet gun the State of NJ put 3 more handguns on the street.
When I was stationed In OKC,OK I bought my first 2 handguns there. All I needed was my NJ drivers license and that was it. In and out in 15 minutes. I'm sure the laws have changed there also.
One other thing. Tell those 2 guys, or maybe women, in front of you if you're gonna come down to Atlantic City to do practice approaches don't wait until 10:30 at night. Noise restrictions start at 11 PM. Tell them to file flight plans also.
Someone once told me that the best place you'll ever be stationed at is the place you just left. There is some truth to that.

And by the way... If you hate NJ so much, why don't you consider moving? I know it's not that easy, but it's a just a thought.

it is a proven fact (over and over) that "gun control" DOES NOT....I repeat DOES NOT lower crimes involving guns.....it only increases the problems....
Cars kill and they haven't taken them off the street.

For what it's worth, in that above picture if I were the cameraman, I'd take those weapons from those kids and beat them to death with 'em. Fingers on the triggers, magazines in place, no empty chamber flags...as far as I'm concerned, those rifles are loaded. Stupid.
And nothing against the National Guard, but it's nice to see that they're really maintaining their presence and displaying proper firearm safety. <insert massive amounts of sarcasm *here*>

I can certainly sympathize....
Come retirement time, don't overlook the enchanted mitten of Michigan.... We're down to a 3-day waiting period for the general public, and if you have a CCW, you've got it made!! You can download the form off the 'net and fill it out at the counter with the dealer and, provided the federally-mandated NCIC call comes back clean, you're out the door in minutes!!
Our CCW licensing has been stream-lined as well. We just had a victory against one of the anti-gun counties here that was requiring a certification from your physician with respect to your mental health.... It was above and beyond the state law and could not supersede the state laws.... it's unfortunate that it cost the tax payers' money for the court to force the county to uphold the state laws!! Ridiculous!!
Anywho, just another reason I'll never live in New Jersey.
Speaking of which, why the hail can't you pump your own gas in that stoopid state anyways?

Thinking about getting an FFL just for that.
Already have a CWL

KC,
as one of the 'stupid' people who suggested you move, I have a question for you:
Are you a resident/citizen of the state of NJ?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but since you are in the military, you don't have to be a citizen of the state in which you are stationed. So, you could have kept your residence in whatever state you previously lived and would not be breaking any laws. You then could buy guns/get a carry permit from that state (check reciprocity for carrying).

Sheesh, I may not agree with KC-10 FE on most of his NJ sucks ramblings, but when it comes to gun/knife laws in this state
is the best way to describe them.

But I will add one thing that really pisses me off about state and federal laws. When I was in the Air Force I could drink underage on base only. Today they can't. A 20 year old can not drink "on base" at the Airmans Club or NCO club. That rubs me wrong. We give these young adults weapons and tell them to kill the enemy. But we won't let them drink on base. And when I see the ages of the war fatalities it really gets under my skin. You can die for this country underage but you can't have a drink.
So what your saying I should stop procrastinated and fill out for firearm card before I die of old age.
I had to go through the State Police because my town doesn't have a local police department. There were 2 people that I worked with from 2 different towns who had police departments and both of their paperwork was done and back to them in a couple weeks. The State Police really took their time. 6 months when the law requires it all be done in 90 days or less. They said they were understaffed and hadn't finished the background investigation yet. But a State Police cruiser did pull up to our house one day and the Officer asked to speak to my wife privately. He told her I was applying for a handgun permit and firearms ID. He asked her if we had been fighting or if I had fights or arguments with other people.
