You think what you want, but its stupid to have to pull the cab just to work on the back of the motor. Its a lot of extra work that is not necessary. In the past the cab didnt have to be removed, so wtf is so special now? NO ONE will WANT to pull the cab, it'll be a necessity. MANY vehicles have "flaws" or drawbacks to them, and this IS one of them. There are TEAMS upon TEAMS working to design this truck, and they could have done a MUCH better job.
Example: WHO THE FU*K wants the back seat SO LOW to the ground in a supercab that you cant sit back there? Im 6'0" and I can BARELY fit UNCOMFORTABLY in the supercab. My knees are in my face sitting back there.... AND when making the new body style, why not add the power rear windows like the f150 did? The space in the back seat of the supercab DECREASED from what it was.

God Bless The USA as we have sooooo many choices. It just takes a little research.
Nah, I still like Ford, and I get HUUUGE discounts buying Ford. I love to drive NEW trucks, and I love the reliability and warranty. I put on 35,000 - 40,000 miles per year, so buying an older truck would nickel and dime me and Id pay as much as buying a new one. The new SD's are awesome looking and perform well. My only complaint was the back seat being low and the windows in the back. I am LOOKING for a 08 SD stick shift crew cab to solve those problems, but there simply arent any out there around here (stick shift, gas, crew cab, xlt or above package). I'll either buy or fab a rear seat lift and be done with that, so it wont be huge, but Iwanted to point out that NOTHING is perfect, and the people who design the different parts of a truck arent always on the same page of what the consumer wants or what works and what doesnt.
I am a network and systems administrator or you could call me the director of IT. I maintain and install large computer networks in my area. Basically I am the guy who keeps the computer infrastructure of several large businesses in my area running. Because of the area in which I live I do not make the BIG $$ I would in a big city. IF I did then I'd custom order my truck the way I wanted it, but for now Ive gotta deal with whats out there. In 5 years or less, when my wife and I have kids, I'll get a new truck and they will probably be re-designed again.
RollingRock, I do not know -STILL, how you would think that pulling the cab off a truck to work on the motor would be a GOOD thing. If you could, please explain this to me, as I OBVIOUSLY do not share your point of view. All you have said so far is that I am ignoant for not wanting to pay the extra $$ to have the cab pulled off and have such a big deal made out of woking on the motor.
RollingRock, PLEASE, tell me what make it SO great! I am willing to listen to your points, if you can stop calling me ignorant and then not backing it up.
Besides, I thought you said you were out? But you still havent gone.... Either provide reasons and explain your points of shut the fu*k up. Calling me ignoant is not explaining either.... in case you were considering that again. AND WTF do you do for a living? Are you the guy that pumps my gas?

OK...I promise I'm not replying anymore. I don't know RollingRock, but he has made some good points here and there. Generally this is a pretty good forum for real world advice and constructive opinion. I think the subject has been answered over and over again. Have a Merry Christmas all...and to all a good night!:santa:

I really tried hard to be off this thread but yes, your ignorance of why Ford designed the F250's to take the cab off is just silly. Working on the large trucks is very difficult, regardless of brand. I would consider Ford an innovator rather than "stupid" for designing the Cab to come off making it easier for the techs to work on the engine. There are only 3 choices for techs. 1. Try and work on the engine with all the chit in the way. 2. Take the engine out to work on it. 3. Remove the cab to allow full access to the engine, thus making it much easier to work on.
The people feeding you that info about costs and pains taking it off are just lazy and uninformed. If a dealership is giving you this info, I would avoid that dealership at all costs and or stop taking advice from them. The SD's were designed with that in mind. Not becuase it was a crappy engine. The cabs come off the 7.3's too.
Ford still does this today, no changes on cab offs. Even on the 08's and even for the 5.4 you are considering. You don't have to take the cab off on a SD with a 5.4 b.c the engine compartment makes it more logical to work on the smaller motor. Have you ever seen how much space the PSD takes up in an SD? Have you see how little the 5.4 looks in the SD? Have you ever seen a cab off a SD? I have. Its really no big deal at all
As for professions. I was just curious of yours. I have to say, I am a little shocked that you didn't do more research giving the fact that you probably have a lot of free time being a SYS ADMIN rather than the Directory of IT. Would you like a few sites where you can do a little research? I dare you to post your comments here on www.thedieselstop.com If you register there, please tell me your screen name so I can see your posts. I wouldn't miss that for the world. You would last 3 maybe 4 posts there.
Well it's getting late and I have cars lined up at the pump I gotta get to. I must pump a lot of gas eh? Check out the signature. Maybe I own the joint.
To Pagnew, I saw you posted before mine, thanks, will catch up with you later.
Roger, best of luck young man. I think you have some growing up to do. No offense, but your posts really lack the maturation of an adult.
Ok this is my .02 what does it matter what a mechanic does if your paying them to do something as long as it works when you get it back. Have you ever climbed up on a truck and reach down in it to work on something its hard on the ole knees.
Imagine this.. Your a mechanic at the local dealer dude pulls in an 07 stupid duty with an uhh... 8 inch lift.... it needs three new injectors... well first you climb all the way up to see what tools you will need... then you climb back down to get them... then you climb back up and start working on it... well you need another tool... you climb all the way back down to get it... you climb all the way back up to continue working on it... keep in mind your greasy *** is climbing all over some ones vehicle... whoops you just dropped your wrench and it fell all the way back to floor... you climb all the way down and get the wrench... now you climb all the way back up and continue working on it... now your freakin tired as sh**. your knees are sore and hurt like *ss...
Now imagine your the owner of this truck... your paying this guy by the hour... he spending more time climbing all over your TRUCK and getting tools than he is working on it... WOW.. that would really chap my A**
Take a second and think maybe there saving time buy doing this I.E. cutting down on hourly labor...,DUHH.. and dont even come with "well what if you want to do it yourself. You cant take the cab off in your driveway" Chances are if your truck needs to have something that serious fixed your gonna take it to a dealer anyway, and if your actually skilled enogh to fix something of this magnitude, you have access to a lift to take the body off...
The engineers at ford are not Idiots its not a flaw.. Its a Freakin Blessing to mechanics and your wallet
WIN..WIN SITUATION

Ok, I can see the validity of all three of your opinions. If RollingRock would have said this in the beginning then it would have saved all of this. He just replied your ignorant without any kind of explanation as to why he felt that way.
It does eliminate the "driveway fixer" and SOME people still want to do that. At a ford dealer it is not ALWAYS by the hour either. They look up in a book what it SHOULD take for time and give you a quote they really need to stick to pretty close. A SKILLED mechanic know what tools he needs before he een "climbs onto" the truck. Im not arguing that some mechanics make mistakes, etc or maybe never have done the job before... BUT at an actual Ford dealership they go to classes to learn about the enignes/vehicles and how to repair them and troubleshoot them extensively. This could go either way... some of the dealerships that arent so "customer friendly" may charge by hour to the minute, but most of the time a ford dealer will give you the approx cost up front and stick to it, unless something else is found the prohibits the job to finish before it is fixed.
Again, I DO see your points. I still do not feel that it is the "best" way to do it. The E series has the compartment inside to remove and work on the back of the motor. They COULD have done something similar on the F series with a firewall that has an access panel or something like that. I just feel its a bit extreme to pull the cab.
I got hostile because people would say somethign and not provide a reason or explanation. I stated in the beginning I did not want a diesel, but I did listen to the arguements for a while. I simply wanted to know the gas MPG on the 5.4 and v10 and I got people telling me I was stupid to buy a SD with a 5.4L. I sisnt ask to be judged, I asked for MPG that actual real world people were getting. Instead I received critcism and had people telling me there was no reason to ever buy a 5.4L.
Thank you to all of the people who posted MPG, for gas AND diesel. Its good to know for the future...who knows, maybe Ill pull a 30ft 5th wheel someday...but that day is not now, lol. I just need a heavier truck than my F150 to plow with, and as an added bonus I can get a 250 stick shift.
RollingRock, if you had given me your point of view sooner, the harsh words wouldnt have had to been exchanged. I believe we both could have handled it better. I did get a bit of info from this thread though.... like the MPG I sought after, and I guess I can see the cab-off feature could be a good thing, but It'll still take a bit of convincing to sell me on it.
I am lucky enough to have a dad who works at Ford and many mechanic friends there as well. If my truck has a poblem I know that I can get the work done cheap if its extensive enough to pull the cab, so Im not THAT worried for my OWN sake. I also have access to lifts and I do all of my own maintenance and can work on my own vehicle if necessary. However, the last 3 I have had were brand new and I got rid of them before the warranty ran out.
Before that I had a $100 93 full size bronco (that I shoulda never sold) and did extensive repairs on that. Just becasue I do computer work doesnt mean that I dont know my way around vehicles, atvs, and snowmobiles
Thanks again to everyone who provided me the answers I was seeking, and the extra constructive opinions and suggestions from the others.

these two quotes from you kind of set it off:
Ford make a damn good truck, any size and any motor
I cant believe ford would engineer something so poorly that you have to pull the cab off to work on the motor...
Best of luck to you on your new truck. Keep those roads clear for the folks up in NY. Looks like a long winter for you guys.
