buying a new SD

Im getting ready to graduate in a few months and will start working for my fathers business full time, and the 5.4 4x2 isnt going to be strong enough.

i love the look of the 05 lariats with the 6.0, but the only ones in my price range have 80 to 90k on them. should i steer away from them or will i get a perfect running truck for 6 or 7 years at 20k a year

I'd open you range to V-10s if you are looking in the 05-07 range. The 3v 6.8 makes 360 horse and 460 torque. Or if you are set on an oil-burner, look into the 7.3. Either way should get you a nice, (and possibly more dependable, sorry guys, just dont trust the 6.0!) truck for less coin.

Yea, im set on a deisel. I not only tow, but i aslo like to go out to moroso and drag. I could afford an 05 with 40k miles on it, but i plan to put an 8 inch lift, 37s a chip and way too many other things on it

If your planning on modding it out that much, you probably would be better to look into a 7.3. They handle the mods without a problem from what I've always heard. Plus they are a lot more dependable than a 6.0.

Just my 2 cents

In that case, I would still look into a 7.3. As mentioned, they handle mods better (aside from the trans). A 7.3 with a BTS trans, injectors, and a good tune can lay down some serious, reliable power. And if you tow a lot and want to run 37's plan on re-gearing too. Ask me how I know, lol. Good luck with whatever you decide, and be sure to post up some pics!

No. The 7.3l's are good engines.

I highly recommend them!

I might be buying one next year... but I'm not dead certain what I will be doing next year.

If your going to drag race and mod it up quite a bit your going to take some life out of the motor... so... IMO a 7.3 may be best, but a 6.0 can make insane power too. Basically, your taking a chance with reliability anyway...just try to get as much info on what mods you are going to add and how they are going to compliment each other.

Either way - Have a great time with the power monster you create and good luck!

80K miles on a 7.3 is nothing if the truck has been well taken care of. That being said, these motors will go several hundred thousand miles, but the rest of the truck and the engine accesories will go before that. Injectors, starters, alternators, ball joints, rear end, water pump, fuel pump, etc, etc will all go out just liken they would on any gasser and most things are more expensive to fix. Even so, a well taken care of truck will go a ways on these parts as well, but they will go first. And as far as I'm concerned (and most anyone else familiar with these trucks) when it comes to the 4R100 auto, BTS in AR is the only place to go to for a good trans. 38's will look god on 8" of lift, but like I mentioned before, if you plan on towing with it, You will want to account for re-gearing as well, probably with 4.3
