The 5.4 or V10 will do just fine for me, the 5.4L my dad has in his demo 08 250 s-cab long bed says its getting 15mpg all the time, so based on the comment about the v10 getting 11 I suppose Ill go with the 5.4L. The only thing I tow is a small trailer for wood and I fill the bed with wood and misc things like my 3-wheeler Empty and stick shift it the 08 250 seemed to have enough power for an everyday driver, and enough to pull/haul the little I do every once in a while. PLUS the dealership my dad works for has a nice XLT 5.4L stick on the lot they want rid of, that means 4000 off the sticker for D-plan roughly plus rebates plus they'll gimmie a little of the hold back for taking the truck on the lot. Sounds good to me! The first 2 new trucks I bought they had to dealer trade for...lol they'll actually be happy this time. Also, my f150 5.4L 300hp gets BETTER mpg than my 4.0L v6 stickshift Ranger..... thats a good one!

Anyone else have a 5.4L or v10? What do you get for MPG in the 08 250/350 SD ??

thanks!
You are going to hate yourself getting a 5.4 in a F250.

But then again, its your truck. so what ever makes you happy.

15mpg? I doubt that very much for the 5.4 F250. 15 would be consider ideal in a F150.

Well, all I can tell ya ismy F150 with the 5.4L Gets 17 mpg and up to 20 on the highway on long drives. When Im driving it pedal to the floor on and off its 15mpg... My dads 250 says its getting between 13 and 15 depending on who drove it most. But I can deal with 15 mpg, I cant deal with 10/11 mpg...

Sounds like you are sold so with that being said, my last parting advice, and its free of charge. You better keep this truck until the wheels fall off, b/c resell value of that truck is going to kill you.

I only get around 11 but most of the time i only go about 5 miles so it doesnt even get warmed up by then. But when we go to camp on the weekend the computer only reads about 11.9 or something, iv never actually checked it to double check.

roger200x what size cab are you going with? if its only a super cab i would only get the 5.4 as well but if your getting a crew i would go with the V10 because you dont want a truck that cant get out of its own way.

btw i know the rangers suck on gas, and thats because of the gears. you are at about 2500rpm crusing at 70mph.

I have a 5.4 in my 07 F150 crew, and a V10 in the 08 F250 Scab, I get about 14 in the 150 and 11 in the 250 around town. Best I have seen in the 150 Pa to Fl 18, best in the 250 on about a 30 mile stretch at 65 on the PA turnpike 14.2. Aprox. 4 mpg difference in each situation, but let me tell you there is no comparison between these motors! The V10 is an incredible motor, and to me well worth the sacrifice of 4 mpg. This motor is so smooth and responsive, I believe it has allot to do with the fact that they are not using that variable cam timing crap on the V10. It idles perfectly smooth and responds right now, no hesitation at all. My personal opinion is if you don't need a V10 or a 6.4 diesel, you really don't need a Superduty, stay with the 150, much nicer ride!

I don't think the OP needs to read anything else. While your post is prob the best answer here, he has already made his mind up on the 5.4 F250.

This topic bothered me so much I called my buddy who owns Grand Prairie Ford in TX, asked him how many 5.4 250's he sold. His answer, zero, they didn't order them b./c they were reserved for School Districts and Fleet sales. He doesn't take them on trades either. They have zero resell value for him and to other owners looking to get a SD.

Sorry to be such an a-hole about this but if you are wanting a F250 just to say you have a F250 and the only thing you can afford is the 5.4 XL version, your priorities are out of whack. Get the F150.

get the v-10. my 05' f-150 4x4 with the 5.4 averaged 14mpg according to the computer. my f-350 is averaging right at 11mpg according to the computer. they shouldn't even put the 5.4 in a superduty, the 5.4 was not really enough for a 5500 pound truck. i couldn't imagine it in my truck weighing 7200lbs. resale has to suck for a 5.4 because the resale for a v-10 sucks...........

15 Mpg

I have a 2008 F250 with the 5.4 and I get 15 mpg even all the time. I had to special order the stick shift but it was worth the wait. I have had nothing but bad luck with Fords automatic tranny's.
It could be depressing if after you buy a truck like this and read all the comments about how worthless the 250 is with the 5.4 engine in it. But like you said, mine works perfectly for what I want to use it for. A whole different truck than the 150. Should last forever under normal usage.
There might be a lot of testosterone floating around in a truck forum, or a small genitalia issue, I don't know. Watch the reply's from this one! Just kidding around. Too me there is no sense wasting gas just for the sake of having a little extra power available when you step on the go pedal. There are some advantages that come with maturity!
I hope you enjoy that truck as much as I do mine. Thanks for letting me add my two cents.
JB

To all of you posers with the purdy driveway queen diesels and v-10s, you don't know what you're talking about. If you want a cheap, reliable, heavy duty truck; you can't beat the deal you can get on a SD 5.4. I have a 2004 super cab long bed that has hauled a 26 foot Bayliner, or a cabover camper and 17 foot fishing boat for more than 40,000 trouble free miles (never back to the dealer) over some of the worst roads in California. Drive it in it's power band and it's got more than enough power right up to it's weight limits. Great engine, great truck, and cheap at $19,900.

Yup...I'm a poser...my 06 V10 truck sees major off-road abuse and plenty of highway. Thanks for admiring my driveway.

Sorry bud, I stick up for the 5.4 in certain situations, but in your case...your truck will NOT keep up with it's bigger bro V10 motor in any situation...not even MPG's (loaded or in the 4X4 version).

Truth hurts...

(Sorry for getting off the topic)

Edited post, high road taken. Mikesc....with your low post count, a little advice for you.

If you take thanks personally, and lash out like you did....expect strong retorts.

Ok, ok now..... Ford make a damn good truck, any size and any motor. Of course the ranger isnt a truckbut a 4x4 car. This being said, why is there arguing? The guy has a point tho... if you are not going to haul you DO NOT NEED A DIESEL and its all for show and a waste of money. If you need it you need it. The v10 gas would be a nice option, but after a new truck and getting married and buying a house in the same year I gotta be a LITTLE conscious about the MPGs. 4mpg difference is a big deal in a truck, especially when you put 35,000 miles on in ONE year. I drive a long way every day and I want this new truck for riving and for plowing. I do not need to haul anything major. Besides.... if its a dog I can always throw on a supercharger and it will have as much as the v10, without the commitment in the beginning. Besides my dad is a service manager and I know that the V10 has had problems with the heads and spark plug threads. They strip out and blow out plugs and ruin the heads. until that completely goes away im not getting a v10 to KEEP. If I was gonan trade it in every year like I have been doing then...fine maybe I woul. But his truck is my keeper, for atleast 5 years. When I have kids Ill buy a crew cab to make life easier and then Ill keep that truck till it dies. I want a long term, smart choice truck and I just cant justify a diesel or 4mpg decrease just for nothing. Stop the fighting, its not supposed to be about whos right and wrong, its supposed to be about facts and stats...

Roger
