I never heard an exhaust that sounded like a dying tortoise!

ha i would say it sounds like it's going fast not slow.
lol that sounds horrible. Sure its loud but come on, nothing else to prove to the world? Except for their loud exhaust . My town is a bit uptight about noise ordinance. I live in the neighborhood so no one wants to hear a loud annoying truck. My truck is too loud as it is especially at night but I can get away with it I believe.

As long as there are pipes carrying exhaust past the passenger compartment and no leaks, it'll pass the Virginia Periodic Safety Inspection.

But, Va. law requires mufflers, so while it might pass the above "safety" inspection, it'll still earn you a ticket on the road side by any police officer / deputy / trooper needing another ticket to round out the week. It's a simple equipment ticket, no points, only $91 with costs and fine, and you can get another one in same day even.

Because the Virginia Periodic Safety Inspection is a "safety" inspection, and noise is not a safety issue, leaks are however. As long as no leaks are present, the inspector mechanic will pass it with straight pipes (no mufflers).

Also inspected are tires, brakes, seat belts, lights, glass, wipers, horns, suspension, mirrors, etc.

They did take window tint out of the inspection process, it's like mufflers, it is left to officers / deputies / troopers to enforce as it was simply causing too many problems having to go visit inspection stations and refereeing disagreements.

I don't make the rules or laws, I just do my job. :santa:

well i am a licensed safety inspection in Texas and the inspection rule is they have to have a muffler and window tint over 20%

i realize the tint but not sure on the muffler..maybe it is because of distraction??

My responses above are applicable in Virginia.

Or by the "just run straight pipes" comment are you looking to add duel exhaust of some form?

I did not notice any gas mileage loss from my true duel set up. I wouldn't think you would lose mileage period.

As for VA inspection. A muffler does nothing, that I know of, for emissions. So you would be fine that way. If they require that everything has a muffler you would be screwed.
yeah i was wanting to cut out the muffler and replace it wth some pipe. i also already have duels

I have a 1998 4.6

With stock exhaust, I got 17mpg highway.
With true dual straight pipes & stock converters, I get 17mpg highway.

Gas milage will go down as you romp down on it more, trying to hear your loudass pipes crackling and setting off car alarms. I have had no problems, it runs like a sewing machine, no code, sensor, idle problems. Never failed inspections. Just lots of noise!
Going on 8 years, Im thinking about welding in quiet mufflers.
