The Gotts Mod Revisited - For 2004+ Trucks
When Bill Cohron was working on the "canned" tunes for Edge for the 09's, he simply removed the snorkel from the end of the intake and did some dyno runs. The results showed improvement in both HP and torque. I've posted a link to this before, but here it is again. He talks about removing the snorkel near the end of the first post: http://dygytalworld.ehost-services13...read.php?t=257
I'd personally try to replace the OEM snorkel with a wider diameter one that gets its air from the fender well, since the air there should be a bit cooler.

Very slight and my exhaust is louder now (Roush Off Road) I got it to chirp shifting into second going around a turn. Very easy to do I would deff do it!
I think it works too. In my case, I noticed a mileage increase, which I think I've talked about before. Now I get the same (better) mileage cruising at 70-75 that I used to get cruising at 55-60. It's only about a 0.5 mpg increase, but every little bit helps. And, I cannot explain why this result should have happened. I only know it did, for me.

I see significant effort going into shaping the PVC pipe via sanding. I have shaped PVC pipe for my aquarium by putting it in a 250 degree oven for 10 minutes or so - it becomes soft like rubber. Perhaps this could be used to shove it through the fender hole.
The ABS or PVC is really very easy to shape if you have a grinder. I have one, but didn't think of using it when I was making my version. And, even with the sander, it was not too hard.

Well after reading about this several times I finally did it. What a great mod for the money. Took about 30 minutes with some trial and error on shaping the PVC. Now I just need to remove it and paint the pipe and clamp. I'll post up a picture later, pouring rain at the moment.
Thanks
Thanks
For those that have not seen this and don't understand why we do the mod:

Mr. Roberts,
We appreciate your consideration of our products and services. Given your situation, I'll try to provide some recommendation for you.
First, removing the cats isn't beneficial anyway so we're good there. The catback exhaust systems provide enough increase in flow without severely sacrificing low RPM torque. We also generally don't recommend CAI kits as they've not show to provide any significant gains over the stock induction system... with one exception. The snorkel that protrudes into the fender is the "bottleneck" of the stock intake system. Removal or replacement of that individual piece provides the same performance increases as an entire CAI kit at a fraction of the cost.
You didn't indicate that you do any heavy towing, so I'll assume for the moment that you don't. My best recommendation are as follows:
If you decide to pursue the CAI kit and do NOT tow, I would recommend going with a custom 87 Performance program (for daily driving), a custom 93 Performance program (for more aggressive performance), and leave the original Transmission Only in place. If you do tow, I'd replace the Transmission Only with a custom 87 Towing program.
If you do not go with the CAI kit, I'd still go with the custom 87 Performance program and just leave the original 87 Towing and 93 Performance programs in place.
The programmer is $399.00 plus shipping and custom tunes are $30.00 for each level.
I hope this helps. Let me know if there's anything else I can answer for you.
Take care.

I just did this. I don't think that I will have a problem with the tube pulling away from the fender wall because it was an extremely snug fit. So snug in fact I had to actually wiggle and pull the tube just to get it back out of the fender wall. And I went down to the 3 1/8" O.D. Is anyone else having this problem or is it just my ineptitude showing through?
After trying the original style of this mod, with the grinded ABS pipe, I felt it looked way too ugly and wanted something that didn't look so amatuer. I went to Pep Boys and got the 3" ricer intake extension tubing. I was going to just get the tubing at home depot, but the git and finish of this product felt much nicer. I can only compare it to the kiddie straws that have the sippy bend in them and stay in the position you bend them into. I grinded and sanded for a good hour and just felt the original mod was a good idea, but not the best.
My suggestion is to save yourselves the headache, spend 10 more dollars and have a OEM+ looking product. Why aren't more of you doing it this way instead?
