Yikes that's the first time I've ever heard of a problem with the AF1. I guess I won't be recommending the 3.5" version anymore.

the 3.5" has to be carefully custom tuned in to make it smooth and avoid problems. The 3" you can run stock but it takes a careful balance of air and fuel for the 3.5" thats why its critical to have someone who knows what there doind to tune it if not you will run lean

Mine does that too. It idles funny for sure with my 3.5. I definitely think I need to get my truck up on the dyno and have it custom tuned.

My truck will also hesitate in certain parts of the rpm band as well. You'll leave a light and have the throttle at the same place and all of a sudden the truck will slow down for no reason and then speed back up again.

I also have the gear hesitation on the shifts at certain points in the throttle. It's like anywhere from 50-75% throttle the truck will just hesitate to shift and whined out the gear and just hold it there and then shift abrubtly. I HATE that crap. People riding with me must think my truck is a pos. lol I can see everyone's head jerk back in the truck when it shifts and I'm not even giving it serious throttle.

Oh well, when I can muster up some extra money I'll probably get some new tunes and get my truck up on the dyno.

Jeremy, everythng you're saying points to a faulty tune. I's go back to the guy who did it and explain the problems you're having. A properly tuned truck should NOT act that way!

yea sometimes these trucks just act great with tunes just depends on the truck. When i first loaded my troyer tunes i was impressed but some of my factory specs were out wack and after 20 min on the dyno it was a world of difference like tunes x2. Some trucks the tunes are spot on some need a little adjustment thats what it sounds like to me. Most people dont but data logging and sneding in the data and getting your tunes adjusted is part of the package that when you buy your tunes with troyer not sure bout vmp. Just a thought i know not many people do it but just a thought

Yea yours sounds messed up Jeremy. Mine is tuned right and my A/F ratio's are fine under throttle per dyno testing. I'm not lean nor have any other issues with it. I theorize that the MAS is having a hard time with the low velocity inside the large diameter tube and maybe dipping below its range occasionally at idle. It showed up more as weather heats up. Once off idle I've never had an issue and mind you it's not a terribly rough idle or anything.

Either way, having both the 3.5 and 3-inch AF1's I am liking the 3-inch better for it's ability to deliver the flow without any rough edges.

all of those things happen on your custom VMP tunes?

I've noticed that too. Ever since this site was sold, Troyer has been on here less and less, I don't think he has posted in like 6 months. I kinda feel abandoned by him.

I've been thinking about getting a 87 econ tune from Justin for several reasons.
1. I have never been all that happy with Troyers shifts, have the same 1-2 shift complaint that others have.
2. I'm still running Troyers 93 perf tune, just paid 3.79/gal for shell 93 yesterday. And my best milage is about 13 mpg, so something has to give. I tried the 87 perf tune and it is worthless compared to the 93, you can feel the difference in power and the mileage is worse.
3. I'm not waiting 4 months or more to get an extra tune from Troyer

Thanks Thumper

I am going to shoot Justin an email and order a 87mpg tune and a 87 high performance tune.

Okay i just went to his website and have a question. Do i have to put down just my computer code or the serial number of my xcal2 also ??

Guys I have a Xcal3 tuned by Troyer, not VMP. It was a mail order tune so this truck has not seen a dyno. And for the record I think Troyer could fix every complaint I have if it was thrown up on a dyno but I'm not driving 12 hours to do this and I'm not trying to fix all this over the phone so I'm planning on having VMP just make new tunes for my truck since they are literally 1 mile from my house. lol

I'm definitely changing the shift settings. I don't mind the harsh shift but ONLY at WOT. When I'm just cruising around the 1-2 shift is annoying as ****. Not only that but I noticed that going from my Edge to adding AF1 and Troyer tunes that I dropped over a 1 mpg on the highway. If anything I thought I would have GAINED mpg not lost.

So hopefully VMP can provide the same power as the Troyer 93 perf. tune and get my better mileage. So as soon as I can muster up some extra cash I'll get some new tunes for this thing.

Jeremy you're thinking about getting the truck dyno tuned, right? From the sounds of things, it's pretty necessary with that intake. Troyer has been selling those AF1s for an eternity so if he can't tune them right from a mail order tune, it's going to be hard for anyone else too. I'm sure Justin could make a hell of a mail order tune for you but it sounds like you should just have it dyno tuned especially everything considered. Not to mention you only live 5 minutes away from his shop.

No problem. You'll be very happ with them. This is the link to order tunes from VMP ..

In the spreadsheet of information to fill out requests both the computer code of the vehicle as well as the serial number of the Xcal2.

Not really, the Xcal3 can support a few more codes but has had some issues with the firmware. The Xcal2 is tried and true, not to mention a tad bit cheaper.

true. I flashed back to stock 2 weeks ago to reset the gear ratio after the 4.56 installation. When I started truck between each reflash, the stock tune idles rough with the 3.5" tube. Also, my truck was a PIA to get a nice flat A/F mix on the dyno chart last time and gained 12rwhp with just A/F mix adjustments. But my 05 only needed minimal tweaking from the mail order tune when it saw the dyno. Appears to be a hit or miss when you start playing with intakes and getting MAF programs based for each intake type. If at all possible, I would always try and get dyno time for correct A/F settings when swapping out intakes and using custom tuning.

Thanks for the info. I'm like you, not a big deal, just kind of annoying. I e-mailed Justin about it, got a response this morning that said he would look into it. If he doesn't see anything out of whack in the tune, I may switch to the 3" tube also. Where did you get yours at? Haven't seen just the tubes or inserts for sale anywhere.

Absolutely, dyno tune only. Plus I've been wanting to know what it makes at the wheel.
