Intermittent Odometer - A Repair
#196
Yes! I performed this repair on my 99 F-150 and it has not failed since. Just be sure to follow the tips about removing the headlight switch as you could break it if you do not release the **** properly. I used a soldering iron and touched the joints with the slightest bit of solder. Make sure the joints do not have solder touching them together when finished. Took about an hour total.

So I had the same problem on my 2006 f-150, I see no one has figured out the 04-08. Well mine had been completely out for a year. I had bought a new cap and it had a dome light. I wanted to run constant power off the battery with inline fuse. On the battery post there's a clamp and that clamp has it's own post with nut. It was pretty corroded so I cleaned it all up and put continued with my wiring. Well I got it all done fired up the truck and my mileage and temp and compass was back. Now this might be compete coinsidence but it might also be the fix. Try it out eveyone with this problem on the 04-08, only takes 5 minutes and could end the frustration I put up with for over a year. Went out on 62,000 and now i have 87,000.

Avoiding breaking the PATS connection?
I had a similar problem after installing the factory cruise control kit on my 99. The small harness that goes to the ignition switch goes to the PATS system and if you touch it it is designed to break to prevent somebody trying to bypass the system. I had disconnected the connector to gain some room but it ended up costing me a tow and about $125 for the fix. The connector sits beside two others kinda behind/below the key switch on a metal bar. The tech told me, "If you touched it, it's broke." So it's mighty sensitive. Hope no one needs this info, but at least it's here.
2001 Ford F150 Supercab here, and I found this thread through a Google search when we experienced exactly the same intermittent odometer problem. This is an extremely helpful thread.
Does anyone have specific instructions on how to recognize the PATS wiring and avoid messing it up? Is it something that connects to the instrument cluster? A photo of what to look for would be really helpful. I don't have any service manuals so I am flying blind.
I promised my wife I wouldn't cause more damage to the vehicle if I attempted this fix.

Thanks for the tutorial, but a question
Finally got around to doing the odometer fix after 5 years. It worked great except for one thing, the odometer works fine but I can't switch over to the tripmeter. Anyone with a similar experience and a suggestion for a fix?
Thanks again for the tutorial.

I have a 2006 F-150 and the circuit board is different. I just took it out to try the fix everyone has said works, but it does not have the plug. My odometer will stay out for months now and every once in a while come back on for a few minutes so I know it must be a loose connection or something. All my pins look great, there are six on this board and it holds on a female connector where six long pins from the LED itself plugs into. Can you say the connector and plugs are not the same length. I see the problem maybe closer to the LED itself with the six pins. But cannot see how to get to it. Going to try and solder all pins and see if I can get to LED where the long pins come through the cluster. Will let you know how it goes.
