Finally got around to painting my cowls today. I used the Fusion Satin Black. Went well and looks great.

The insulators on the end of the cowl pieces that Ford is using is junk, already breaking up.

 

Definitely! I thought about giving mine a good coat of silicon, but decided to just paint them instead. They look pretty good with the paint on them, but I wonder if they sell just the insulators? They're not going to last too much longer in the Florida heat.

 

Damn, yall. This is why I love/hate this board. I was going to use the Showroom New Dye that has been such a hit on the Detailing board.

Now you go and do this (and it looks f'ng SWEET) and I gotta have this internal debate with myself for another month!!

 

I was in the same boat as you. I decided to go this way for 2 reasons:
1. It's a lot cheaper
2. It's a more permanant solution. Eventually that dye will fade and you'll be left with what you started with again. I imagine the paint with the clearcoat will last much longer.

 

For What it is worth i did some of those plastic lawn chairs about 5 or 6 years ago when the plastic paint had just come out, no clear coat. They sit out in the sun 24 seven and the location they are in gets the west TX sun and they just started showing some damage on the arm where your hands typically rest. These have been used to and the paint is still on. So if they have improven the formula since then and added clear..we should be good to go.

Thanks for posting this up & taking the time to take/post pics. I just started this on my 05 FX4 (the cowls were in worse shape than yours, lol), and it looks a million times better. Think I'll be doing my flares & bedrails this weekend.

I've been meaning to take some pictures and post an update, but I've been busy/lazy lately.
The paint is holding up great and it still looks as good as the day I did it, so I'm very happy.
I thought about doing my bed rails, but I saw the results of Black WOW in the detailing forum, and think I might give that a shot one of these days.

So, how does that cowl look now after 10 months?

 

Mine is 8 months and it still looks great.

 

My truck is only a few months old, haven't even hit the first oil change yet. I wonder what kind of dressing will PREVENT it from looking like that in the first place. I've seen videos of that Black WOW and Black Magic, and I know they will do wonders for older trim, I just don't want it to get that way in the first place...

On the other hand, I'm thinking that the paint is protecting the plastic from oxidation, and MAYBE that is the better long-term solution for keeping that "New" look. Does anyone else have an opinion about this?

I would go outside and snap a picture, but I'm incredibly lazy.

 

Im in the process of painting my headlights now. Looks like this will be my next step. (both the cowl and bed rails) **Off Topic I will be posting my aftermarket headlights in the classifieds as soon as my stocks are painted. I will post pics later but they are projectors with Halos if anyone is interested. $100.00 takes em.
