can i spray paint my emblems black?

so i just used the forum search and couldnt find what i was looking for..

i want to black out all the ford emblems on my truck (front and back ovals and side rectangle f150 emblems) and want to know if i can just do some light sanding and tape off the area around the emblems and spray a coat or two of black spraypaint over them and maybe clear coat them? would that be a good idea? if so, would any spray paint be good?

I don't know why you couldn't.. Just sand them with a very high grit paper and make sure to clear coat em.
Merry Christmas!

Yes, it can be done. Scuff them up first then follow it w/ paint. Most people on here (myself included) use Krylon Fusion (spray paint for plastic) satin black.

The best way would be to remove them and paint them off the truck to prevent overspray. It's not hard to take them off (a little heat and some fishing line) and it only takes some 3M emblem tape to put them back on.

If you don't want to take them off then yes, you can mask off surrounding areas. Mask off more than you think you need, though, and be sure to tape down the newspaper on all sides. Scuff with some sandpaper and use Krylon Fusion like everyone already suggested. Put some clear coat over that, too, and don't touch it for a day or you'll have some nice fingerprints on your freshly painted emblems.

Did you wet sand them? If not it may have been pretty abrasive on the front oval--hence why it peeled. No biggie, though, since you're painting it.

Generally I wait about an hour after the color coat before applying clear over it.

------heat as in heat gun? then i assume just run fishing line under the emblem. i want to paint mine but have no interest in painting them on my truck. i was contemplating buying new emblems but i have no idea on the cost. maybe a 09's, iduno.

this are purely adhesive emblems? no posts in the back?

A few of the emblems have posts on the back so the truck does have holes there. It is purely adhesive, though, so you can pry them off with a heat gun and fishing line. Just work around the posts. The 09 emblems will work, but there are some modifications people have done to theirs. Can't remember the details but a quick search should give you what you're looking for if you're thinking about switching to 09 emblems.

The only one that isn't held on by adhesive is the front oval, which is bolted through the grille. Pop the hood and you will see the two nuts you have to remove.

It's not difficult at all to remove them and put them back on.

yeah ,sanded the chrome off, used a plastic primer spray paint , than a few coats of a black satin spray paint.

then the inlays i got from patriotdecals, they are a pita to put on the 09 emblems , as you can see they are not perfect, but im satisfied.
