Going to try and Paint / Make my Roush Grille
Well Monday I got my roush grille in the mail. Right now all it has is electrical tape over the chrome so i can't see it. Tomorrow I'm going to go get supplies to make my custom lower roush insert and the paint and prep stuff to paint both of them. I was told I'm going to need and really prep the grille well so the paint sticks, and I'm doing the same with lower.
Tomorrow I think I'll only get the chance to start work on the lower grille, but if time allows I'll try and get to painting. I'll make sure I take lots of pictures of everything.
Wish me luck

Ok well I got started on this project today. I'm using something called starboard, or marine lumber. It's basically a very strong, sandable plastic, that I can get cheap at work. The one problem I ran into with this is it was about 7" short of what I needed, so I picked up some metal dowels to combine them for strength. I'm also using a marine type epoxy that is designed to work with the starboard. Once I had my 3 short strips cut I put them in the vice to try and smooth them out with a planer. Then drilled the ends inserted the dowels and epoxyed them together. They're drying now but I hope tomorrow to start sanding to round the front of them to get rid of the square edges.

Nice
So do you have to sand the 'chrome' off the Roush grille down to the bare plastic before you can paint it, or just scuff it up?
Ive been looking at grabbing one of those cheap Roush grilles and painting it black also, Ill be watching this.

Well....
I've seen where at least one member painted right over the chrome with Crylon fusion plastic paint, without roughing or sanding it at all, and he says it's sticking perfectly so far.
I think I'd at least rough it (or should I say, take the shine off of it) with some 400 grit sand paper. This is what I plan to do to mine next week. I actually tried sanding one single bar, with 400 grit, and while it was pretty easy to take the shine off, by sanding on it quite a bit more, it did not look like it was even starting to get through the chrome layer......
.....and then I thought to myself, once it does break through, that might be a whole other can of worms ! What if it starts to lift and peel easily on some spots, and you just flat can't get it off of others, without jacking up your grille ? Don't think I want to go there. I'm going to try to just take the shine off, then hit it with several light coats of Krylon Fusion satin black, and see how it does...

Hey Jumper.....
I'm not opposed to priming mine first either, but just curious; What type of primer did you use ? Do they make Crylon fusion primer too ? The reason I ask, is that Fusion is designed to stick well to plastic..... but not neccessarily to primer..... and then of course, maybe that primer is not as suitable for holding onto plastic (for the long term) as that Krylon Fusion paint is.....

Primer first
I used Krylon reguler primer, nothing special. I let it bake for 2 days then applied black. Went to the lake yesterday 100 miles round trip, and alot of bugs. Got home and washed it off no problem yet! I figure for the $80 i spent if i gotta re paint now and again its cool.
Update
After awhile of having alot of stuff to do I got some time today to get working on the lower grille. Got the bars all mounted together, and maybe by the end of the night it might be installed.
