I think the key for plate lights is the LED needs to have alot of lights at the top, theres no sense on having them on the sides and less LEDs ontop now that I think of it. One guy on here was sucessful with plate lights though I need to find that thread again and see what he bought.

What I did

The problem, I think, is that all the "bright" bulbs are "forward firing", which puts the light into the end of the housing. The only "side firing" ones I found that would fit are polarized, which means I'd probably have to swap wires on one of the sides.

I bought a pair of WLED-WHP bulbs at $4.95 ea from: http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html These are still forward firing, but they're short enough that they don't "fill up" the bulb housing. Then, I painted the nontransparent insides of each bulb housing with chrome paint, using a brush, of course, so that they would be more reflective.

This is the result, taken with available light (no flash):

I "cloned" out most of the license number because I felt uncomfortable having it plastered all over the internet. But, I left the two center characters, so you could see how well the plate is lit.

I'm happy with the result.

And, you notice I've installed a "Fire and Ice bar" too.

I hardwired it to the wiring in the trailer connector - solder and shrinktube.
