paintable mirror caps or FX2 mirror assembly

Ive searched on the subject and found the same threads over and over, and the place that comes up britechrome.com is no help. My problem is I want to do some paint work on my mirrors but every body shop in town has told me I cannot paint the mirrors and get it to stick, they say there is too much "release" on the mirrors for paint to stick. In previous threads everyone seems divided on painting the whole mirror and/or just the cap. i like both looks and need to decide on the mirrors pretty quick, the painters have already finished the flares and LT handles. .so.. .

Where can I find a cap? or the FX2 mirror assembly part #'s (power mirrors w/ signal)? or what can I do so the ones I have will accept paint and make it work?

TIA for the help. .

I have a very good friend that has a body shop and will ask him.

BTW, where did you get the leather center console and how much did you pay for it?

I bought it off my dealer local when I was doing the LT shifter swap and got it for about 150 I think. Much better than the hard FX4 one!

hey 05redFX4-- I Had run across that thread a while back, but what I gathered from it was that the part #'s mentioned where for the 07-08 two peice mirrors and that was the paintable portion that could be swapped out? or do 05's have a two peice mirror? ive never looked. . .

EDIT, I see you looked and its not a two peice, so these caps would not work? or is it a whole new backside for the mirror?

They should work just fine, the mirrors on my 05 and 07 are identical. Both trucks have the deluxe mirror package with the power heated signal mirrors which is the same housing that has the painted skull caps. Once you pop out the mirror glass, there are 4 screws inside the housing, pull them and the housing shell splits into two pieces, the front half or shell is what is replaceable. You can paint your current skull caps, just sand smooth and use a flex agent in the paint, or just buy the fx2 caps that are allready smooth.

Im torn, I like both, but i dont know which will look better for me in the end. What do you think with the bushwacker pocket flares, Lt handles, and the "tonka" look im goin for??

05redFX4--Thanks for that info, i will definatly go the OEM route if i decide to go with the caps. I appreciate the help, whats your opinion?

Your body shops are full of ****. I had mine painted about 6 months ago now and they are sticking just fine. It's all about the prep on them. What's involved I don't know because I had a local shop do it but it CAN be done.

A co-worker of mine has had his painted on his for a year or two and they look good as new.

I talked to a couple different body shops before having mine painted, they both said they would do it but neither said they would guarantee the work because they were items that were not meant to be painted.

Blah.

I've had mine painted for six months so far and there is nothing wrong with them. A co-worker of mine had his painted by the same place in Nov. of '06 and his look good as new.
