It will take years in fuel savings to recover the cost of a gear change.
Cool. I downloaded an app that should help me track it to see what my actual mileage is.

It does sound amazing. If sound is one of your top criterias when choosing a truck than the 5.0 would be a good choice. If more low end grunt, less downshifting when towing and quicker acceleration is what you want than the Ecoboost would be a better choice.

FWIW here's my MPG graph, from my spreadsheet. Red being actual (hand calculated) and pink being computer display (low line instrument cluster)

Size: 60.1 KB

Im about two weeks behind on updating it as you can see.

My average of averages, with some errors in math based on non equal percentages, is 18.207 (which includes my 3 heavy towing MPG)

The 5.0 sounds so good stock that I would be very hesitant to go aftermarket exhaust. And the fact is regarding towing, it probably has more guts than anybody else's motor of comparable size. Bear in mind that the Ecoboost whips the 6.2 Chevy up the mountain towing. I have owned two 460s, and my dad had a 454 -1975 model. The Coyote is no slouch towing. It gets double the fuel mileage towing as my 90 model 460, and more than double the carbureted 454. I'm sure the 6 speed has something to do with that . I'm guessing the 460 and 454 probably got their peak torque lower down, but they didn't have very much more peak torque, and the Coyote has 130 more ponies than they did. It has plenty to get a load moving, and it will keep it moving.

I have always put an exhaust on my trucks just for sound. When I got my first 5.0, didn't see the need. I have left both of them stock.

Indeed it does! No question about that. I reckon a feller could use an ol' Folger's can fer a muffler on the 5.0, and it would still "sound amazing".

Second one with a total of 278 miles on the truck (208.1 on that tank) - 11.43mpg

Lifetime average of 11.13 (not an average of the average)

The trusty lie-o-meter was at 15.2 when I shut it off at BWI on Monday AM. After playing around in the snow yesterday and taking my wife to her clinic (to see one patient in 10" of snow) its at 14.1.

I planned on 14mpg over the span of my ownership.

The decision as to which motor has been made much more difficult due to the helpful comparative information, including the moving part count on the two engines. If moving parts was the deciding factor, we would all be using wheelbarrows to haul our stuff and I am too hold to haul 12,000 lbs with multiple wheelbarrow trips. I started the post decided on the 5.0 but now I am less about sure which is the right one for me.

Do any of you have any more real world comparisons on towing with the two motors ? Towing comparison is an extremely difficult pre-purchase evaluation because with a test drive you can compare the sound and acceleration of the two motors but the dealers I have talked to will not let you hook up a camper to test them both. Does anyone have comparative mpg's towing the same or a similar trailer ? I realize that the numbers won't be scientific but they may be the best info available. I have read that the 5.0 mpg is better than expected when towing.

Final question, I haven't been able to find any head to head quarter mile and zero to 60 times for the 2015 stock trucks ? I saw the 1/8th of a mile you-tube video that was done in Colorado, but I don't buy that Ford couldn't find a full quarter mile for testing and the elevation probably gave the eco's a slight advantage. I also saw the videos of the new eco challenging Ram and Chev towing up the hill. The past numbers I have seen are close enough to not make it a deciding factor but I was wondering if the slight bump in hp and tq in the 5.0 for 2015 was able to narrow the margin between the two power plants. The 5.6 sec 0-60 times for a 5,000 lb truck that can tow over 10,000 lbs (obviously not at the same time but maybe the 2020 F150?) makes me giggle and say I want that.

I've netted better fuel economy While towing once I learned how the truck likes certain speeds and RPMs

I've gotten as high as 11.6 while towing estimated 8k

One magazine did an actual test of all the trucks on the market and what mileage the got empty, loaded and towing. I have posted a link on here before but can't find it at the moment. I do remember the EB got the best mileage in the towing test of all gas powered trucks. It beat the 5.0 by .5-1.0MPG. Both trucks were in the 11-12MPG range.

I haven't seen it on the 2015s yet but I'm sure one of the car rags has tested all the new engines. I would bet the 2.7EB would run neck and neck with the 5.0 and the EB would be .5s faster 0-60 and 1-1.5s faster in the 1/4 mile.

Patman, your mileage up there in the chart looks mighty good. I've about decided my new truck will be the model with options I like best, no matter which engine! My needs are towing 5,300 pound travel trailer, SuperCrew, 18-48 highway mpg. Forget city mpg for me. I'm only concerned about highway. Wife wants Lariat because that's what my '02 is. She thinks its the ticket. I've just got to drive the two Ecoboosts and the 5.0.
