Help! 2011 5.0 pings

Tried several different gas stations. Happens mostly when shifting into second, light on the gas. Now if I stomp on it, no pinging. Tried all grades, and it gets better but does not go away. If I run 87 it REALLY pings. Any ideas (other than take to the dealer?). Oh yeah, uses about a quart of oil per 3k miles. 29k on it. Love the truck otherwise.

Take it to the dealer, that's what a warranty is for. Your oil consumption is considered normal.

Mine did the same for a while after I first got it too. I got a tuner and run the 93 octane tune and...no more pings. I think its something to do with the timing being off just a hair for the gas around here. Adjusted timing with the tuner and higher octane fixed the problem.

Try unplugging your VCT solenoids and see if the problem goes away.

My 5.4 does the same thing and is worse with a tuner.

I wouldn't mess with the VCT on a 5.0, it's a whole different system than was in the 5.4.

My 2010 5.4 does this when going from 1st to 2nd gear. Sorry for the ignorant question but where are the VCT solenoids?

bansheerider - http://blaggers.info/?p=88

i know its older but maybe that'll help you out.

foxer - i would just try running a higher octane for a while and see how that helps. Redline has a synthetic additive that might do you some good too. http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=80&pcid=12

i run that every 3000..

I had a ping on hard acceleration (passing on highway/in town traffic) while running 87 ocatne E10 Shell gas. It went away when I switched to 87 octane E10 Conoco/Phillips 66 gas. I have also tried Shell 93 octane and have no issues with ping/pre-detonation.

I run MC 5W20 Syn Blend oil and have zero issues with oil consumption between 6,000 mile service interval's.

I imagine that might make it worse.

Or, in English: "I read on another website where the ping went away with two cans of Sea Foam applied through a single tank of gas. I will find it and see if I remember correctly."

Of course, we should all just assume he meant to call himself "Blue Oval Boy". To call himself an "Ovel" would just be awkward:

ovel [ˈɒvəl], n (Non-Christian Religions / Judaism) Judaism a mourner, esp during the first seven days after a death See also shivah, [from Hebrew]

There must be something wrong with my truck. The oil level on the dip stick is always on the full mark at oil changes.
