Just like the title says... I am not particularly fond of chrome. Bought my truck used, previous owner had a hard on for chrome. Trying to unbling as much as possible with little coin spent as possible. Has anyone scuffed theirs up and turned it black?

I opted to have the chromed aluminum step bars ( and brackets ) powdercoated satin black. Co$t ( which included prep' and powdercoating ) was $50.

I don't know how they would turn out. Thought about spraying Line-X on them? Or buying a set from another member?

 

Plasti-Dip maybe??? I know people PD their wheels... running boards shouldnt be any different.

 

I just did mine. Not sure on the durability compared to line-x, but I went the cheap Rustoleum route. Scraped up the chrome with my orbital sander and some 90 grit. Used one coat of self etching primer, one coat of black primer, and then two coats of the bed liner.


Only time will tell how durable this is going to be, but I know touchup is going to be easier compared to powder coating or line-x.

Hey Fritz, that looks great! Did you pop off the plastic steps off or was it screwed in or did u just paint around it?

 

Thats exactly what I plan to do to mine......Let us know the durability......Looks great

 

Fritzz- How did you remove the step pads and end caps and did they still fit fine after the added layer of stuff (look like it from the pics).

 

I did not take the plastic off. I started too, but did not want to mess them up too much. I just ended up masking off all the plastic and applied paint.

Not sure if you mean fit back on the truck or talking about the plastic. Didn't take the plastic off, so don't know how it would fit, went back on the truck no problem.

Does anyone know how to remove the end cap? Also how are they holding up?

 

Would be curious to see an update on how these held up over the years... Anyone? Bueller?
