Yes you can add it, many on this forum have you just have to buy the controller and take the truck to the dealer to get it activated

Do you have factory tow package?

Like the title says, if you have factory tow package you can fairly easily add an aftermarket or even a factory brake controller. If you don't have the factory tow package you will need to add the wiring needed for the brake controller.
Factory brake controller requires activation within the PCM but can easily be done by the dealer for minimal cost. One last thing, I have a Tekonsha P3 controller and now have the factory controller on my 09 and the difference between the 2 in my experience has been like night and day. The factory controller rocks!!

I installed an aftermarket controller on my 09 and it is inop. I checked the fuse but haven't had time to get any deeper than that yet. Is there something that has to be activated for those too? Truck came with Tow Package and I didn't have to do any wiring aside from using the adapter to connect the controller to the plug in the back of the cubby.

TIA

If it's like previous years, there are relays and fuses that have to be installed, they should be in a bag in the glove box.

As mentioned, the dealer needs to enable it. Just plugging it in does nothing to make it work.

In addition to above, you will need to install the relay and fuse.

Buy the controller from Tasca. Put it in yourself. It takes 5 minutes. Bring to dealer and have them turn it on in the personalities settings in the pcm for about 50 bux or less. Total cost will be way way less than 500-800 your dealer is quoting. I did it and my cost was just over $350 CDN

There are numerous threads here on how to buy and install the factory TBC. Do a search and you'll find all the details you need.

Three key points:
1. The TBC for the 2009 is different than for the 2010, be sure you get the correct one.
2. If you are minimally skilled, you can install it yourself.
3. The TBC MUST be activated by a Ford dealer, but there are dealers out there who will do it for free, or just a modest fee.

Two other comments. I agree with the other posters that the integrated Ford TBC is significantly better than any aftermarket one. I had a Kenosha on my last truck - the integrated brake controller is like night and day.

Finally, the fuse and relay that should be in your glove box have nothing to do with the TBC, they activate the hot lead in the 7-pin trailer wiring harness, to provide constant power to the trailer for battery recharging, etc.

Thanks. When I contacted the place I bought the controller from, they indicated none of this. No way to poke the PCM at home?
