Howdy! , thanks for asking that! I used Gates Transmiossion Cooler Line at just over $6 bucks a foot! Thirty couple bucks for 5 feet. I hope that works. I knew you had to get the hose made for trans fluid use. So I hope I am good to go...
And since you asked... maybe I can ask you....
The lower quick connect fitting on the radiator is leaking profusely! I attempted to get it out, with the correct tool, and it would not budge... seems there is a replacement fitting for this... but I am at a lose as to how to proceed. I am not sure if this is a ford radioator or some other after market one, and I doubt the fitting are the same. I think what I will do is try again to get the line out, then if I can remove the fitting.... looks something like this.... but crazy expensive... almost half way to a new radiator.... Any experience with this? Thx!

It could be a 4R70E or a 4R75W or a 4R75E, there's very little difference, same fluid capacity.

No, I haven't had any experience with that type of fitting. Spray some penetrating oil on it and let it sit for a while is the only thing I can think of that might help.

Yes thats a good idea, Ill do it. I am sorta licking my wounds today. Just catching up etc... still gotta clean up my shop and put my tools away again.... Not really any room in there now after I got it all back together, but maybe just moving that fan shroud back will make it easier to access.

THX!

Like I said, there's very little difference between those 3, none of which would concern you directly. Car-part.com says that an 04 with the 4.6 has a 4R70E. Code "A" could be any of those 3 and they are all interchangeable.

according to the 04 factory service manual, "A" = 4R70E and "B" = 4R75E.

i don't think it really holds much water though because i just had the trans on my 04 4.6 stx rebuilt (door sticker A) and the rebuilder swore up and down to me that it was actually a 4R75W. i believe him too because he has over 40 yrs experience and he got the thing running great.

THIS is why I get the $20-30 manual, and make corrections or additions. Also I nite mikes or etc if major or rare things that were done, sometimes adding the parts source if it was odd or hard to find. This goes to the next owner. It adds value.

That is good and helpful information! Thank you! I guess if I get into it, and try and fix it... depending on what it is... I may need to know the exact model trans, unless the part is interchangeable. Ill look at the trans itself to see if its I D there. I dont get why its all such a mystery. Why cant it just be stated this is your transmission?
I ran into this trans confusion thing when replacing the motor and trans in my 2006 Subaru. I bought a motor with what I thought was the same trans as the one that I had, but it was not even close well it was pretty close but the final drive was different, and I was not messing with any of that... There was no rhyme or reason to how they identified transmissions for Subarus. I was able to get one locally that was the exact one as the one that was bolted to the old motor and its still running great!
It seems they even changed the codes to match the code of a different code for the same trans? Confusing. But then so was finding the correct timing chain cover for this truck... took me a couple shots to hit that one.

Thanks for that bit of info. I searched for quite a while as to what the 'A' code meant. It seems you found out it really means nothing. So what was wrong with your trans?

I got the offending fitting out of the radiator yesterday. 27 mm socket and very little room to work... trans fluid leaking and making it all very slippery... but I got it... Now I just gotta find one to put back! Once I get this fixed I can diagnose the trans a little better I hope.

"It's a 'bute Clark"!

last year mine started throwing an intermittent "trans fault o/d off" in the odo display. when it happened it would still drive but shifted very harshly. it began happening more frequently so when i pulled the engine to replace the cylinder heads i had the transmission rebuilt at the same time. he said that od servo snap ring was busted along with some other problems. it had the yellow plug in there so it had never been serviced. ~130k

Well that is kinda what mine is doing. That was very smart to do all that at once! May have been easier If I had done that too... LOL but I did not know fully that there was a trans issue... still not sure if mine is from sitting for two years or an internal problem like a snap ring.
Still on the hunt for that fitting. Went to look for one but forgot the one I pulled Gonna try again today!

Just got back from hunting for that fitting for the trans line to the radiator. Lost of them out there, but none that were what I needed. Found them on line. $35 to $65 bucks. Forget that... I ordered a new radiator... it will be better in the long run I think. I could try and order the part, be cheaper, but if its wrong... more time lost etc... Radiator will be here Tuesday or so.
