2006 4x4 Ford F-150 5.4 Triton

Recently my 4X4 Ford F-150 5.4 Triton would stutter when I try to accelerate at various speeds. It would stutter/jerk for about 3 seconds, the go back to normal.
I took it to a mechanic and they said it is the transmission. I would need to have it looked at. Could it be true it's the transmission?

How many miles on the truck? How many miles on the spark plugs? I'd bet on a misfire before I would on a transmission issue.

Probably original, time to change them. Be aware of the sticking and breakage issues, if you have it done take it to someone who is experienced with 5.4 3 valve spark plug changes.

i do think GLC nailed it. My 06 4x4 5.4L did the same thing. Basically when it would come under load, (around a corner/up a hill) the transmission would shift down hard, but it ended up being the plugs. This all happened around 100k miles. I ended up getting another 140k out of the trans before a rebuild. It was an intermittent miss that the pc never picked up.

My '07 started that missing crap at 67,xxx miles, felt like transmission judder too, but new SP-546 plugs cured it 100%.

SP- 507 was OEM and was superceded by SP-515.

SP-546 is newest as of 2019.

Link to my change. https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...546-plugs.html The worry over a broken plug was much worse than the event was. I saved a ton on labor so investing in the Lisle kits was a no brainer ... ( besides, I have a '08 Mustang 4.6-3valve.)

Thank you. I'm going to get the plugs changed Monday.
By the way, how much did the spark plugs cost per plug?
My 2006 F-150 is also red.

Has same problem on my 07. Was a coil pack, but I did change the plugs after that. Followed a combination of the Ford procedure and FordTechMakULoco suggestions. Was a horrible task but I got them out without breaking any. Very poorly designed engine. Traded it for a 2013 5.0, nice engine now.

Had the same issue on mine. Changed the spark plugs, coils and fuel filter now it runs excellent. Should get a misfire code for bad plugs or coils. Misfire code may not pop up until it gets real bad which is what mine did.

Thank you for the information.
I'm going to take it in Monday.
Should I try the spark plugs first, then see how it runs? Then if it misfires again, do the coils?

I would do it all at one time you will end up paying twice. Coils have to come off to put the plugs in.

I'd hold off on the coils. Just do the plugs for now and see if it helps. The OEM coils generally don't go bad this soon. Good coils aren't cheap (~$40 each) and the cheap Chinese coil sets you find on Ebay are garbage. For plugs you want to use Motorcraft SP546, if you need coils Motorcraft DG511.

The cost of a plug change to have done by a COMPETENT shop is $300 and up, depending on how many break.
