35"s on 3.73 gears? 2004 FX4

How do you guys feel about 35" tires on 3.73 gears. I have a 2004 F150 FX4 and I just put 35s on it and want to know everyone's opinion on this and if it puts to much stress on the transmission.

I have been running close to a 35 for over 2.5 years and have brand new ones in the garage ready to go on. With programmer i have no major power loss and tranny temp is not bad at all. I have tow/hauled with them a good bit too. Just be smart take off O/D when needed and i think you will be just fine.

Thanks for the info;

Do you think this programmer is worth it?

There's one on craigslist for $175.00 but I could try to negotiate depending on if its worth it.

The link did not work, but one word of advice i can give you is make sure the programmer has been disassociated with the original vehicle if its used. They are made to only actively work with one vehicle at a time, so if the owner did not do that its useless to you. I do not know a whole lot about the diablo products for F150s, but they are a reputable brand.

I have a 6 inch lift in mine and the previous owner had 33's on it. I purchased a SCT with custom tunes from VMP and was satisfied.

However, I just put on 35's and decided to bite the bullet and go with 4.56 gears last week and I can tell you the smoothness and driveability of the truck has increased dramatically! I will also shortly develop a thread after 3 gas fill ups to provide documentation of any MPG gain or loss.

I'd throw a tune on it and call it a day, after a couple months if you want more power change out your gears.

If you tow, then i'd recommend swapping them out but just the tune will get the trans shifting better than it did stock.

Effective Gearing

Running 35's on our F150's with 3:73's gives you about a 3:55 effective ratio if I remember correctly. Which is a stock ratio and actually what my truck has. I run about 35's and I do feel its down on power but the tuner exhaust and intake make it livable. I will be re-gearing mine though cause it gives me a 3:31 effective ratio, not good for towing.

4lo.com has a bunch of good resources to determine gearing and such. I used it to figure out my gearing, I was thinking 4:10's for my truck. It puts me to about a 3:73 effective which is a good balance point for my daily driver.

So 3.73 gears and 34" tires.... would that be any good for towing?? i have exhaust and Airaid air filter.

I tow a 5000lb holiday trailer probly every second weekend in the summer no more than a hour at a time.

Personally, I prefer 4.56 with 35's.

Well they certainly wouldn't suck, it will tow like it has 3:55's which is the highest gears these trucks came with from the factory, but I would think you would want lower.

Yup, 35's and 3.73's will work fine. I have an 08 FX4 that's had 35's since nearly new. No problem.

It works fine until you go to tow anything of significance. I just upgraded to 4.56 and wouldn't drive my truck another day with 3.73 after having these for 1k miles. The difference is unreal.
