Dealer screw up or common practice?

So after diagnosing a hesitation in the 40-50 mph range, I decided to change the plugs. They have about 50k on them and looked a little burnt after I pulled the first few. After getting them all out, the dealer that did my change last time put 2 different plugs in! Five say 7d and 3 say 7E. Is this normal or did the dealer screw me? The electrodes are clearly different sizes. Can this cause any long term damage? Should I bring it up with the dealer or just let it go?

Actually, the insulator is a different length, but the eletrode looks the same.

I may be wrong, but I think those are two different heat ranges. One is the original and one is the replacement that is a colder plug to help deal with lean issues.

It appears this is what you have. Are the 421's the originals they never changed?

They supposedly replaced them all. That was 2.5 years and 50k miles ago. They probably thought I'd never check. I'm thinking about asking for my money back for the spark plug change since they either never did it, or only did half. THat sounds fair right?

do any of the plugs have a paint mark on the top. ford usually puts a paint mark on the top of the plug. its an easy way to identify an original plug. what you may have got was a few original design plugs and a few updated design plugs. if they lasted 2.5 years they couldnt have caused you much concern. i dought any service manager will give you any kind of reimbursment from work performed 2.5 years ago, maybe a free oil change if youve been a loyal customer, but its worth a try.

Its difficult to say whether they did half a job or used different plugs. I would pull the receipt and it should list parts used. I suppose whether they did half a job or used some different plugs, either way, they didn't do a proper job. But again, be certain when you look at the receipt to see if they charged you for 8 plugs and see what part number they have listed.

I'm not sure I agree. I wouldn't jump the gun until he has researched the receipt but if the receipt says replaced 8 plugs and the receipts lists 8 of the same part number, then there could be misrepresentation.

They either only changed half of them, or they used 4 OEM's and 4 improved replacements. The PZT2F is the OEM and the PZT14F is the replacement.

going back to a shop 2.5 years later for a plug issue....good luck.

I would just have to suck it up and just not go there ever again.
