2004 f150 5.4l 104k

Hi guys/girls. New here, and wanted to see if I could find out some info. My trucks starting to make a hell of a clunking noise when cornering. Sounds like something rolling around in the bed sometimes. I know it's coming from the rear end. It makes a hell of a thud, like I'm dropping the tranny. Any idea exactly what in the rear end is causing that noise and what might need replaced? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It is when you are braking/going into a turn, or when you are stepping on the gas after a turn? Could be a number of things from suspension to the differential, be a little more specific or a video would be great.

Sorry...

...it's when I'm accelerating into a corner. Doesn't really do it at all when I'm hitting the brakes. It's always on acceleration. And it always seems to happen when the body is at a slight angle if you know what I mean. Never a flat turn...like a turn going up a hill or over a bump. And usually only slow speed turns.

hmm sounds like differential or driveshaft to me. Since its only on turns and you are over 100k miles, leads me to believe the clutch packs in your limited slip might be shot or messed up. Did you have the diff fluids changed at 100k? If so the mechanic didn't mention anything about your diff?

I actually did change the fluid myself at 100k...and I was actually hoping that would help, but it didn't. there was a good deal of metal shavings that I cleaned out...but honestly, although i've worked on a lot of cars, this is the first rear end i've torn into. So I wasn't sure if the amount in there was normal or what else to look for when I was in there.

Was the fluid a metallic color?
Like silver or something?

Yep, it definitely had a silver tint to it.

If you have a limited slip, did you add friction modifier?

Yep, I added the friction modifier too. No change. I'm beginning to think, after reading all the posts on here with what seems like the same issue I'm having, that it might not have a fix. It seems like some people have found an answer, and it's been different in each case, and then there are some people that just have to live with this noise.

I've already done the slip yoke greasing several times before I finally just replaced the driveshaft and that cured the "slip bump" on accelerating from a dead stop, but this clunk still remains. I think I'll try some simple things first before I tear back into the rear end. ....like tightening the shackle bolts first. Then I might try and put a tune on it to change the shift points. if none of that works, then I'll go for the rear diff rebuild.
