Bull Bars and Bike rides

Eventful weekend! (maybe latenight will get off my a$$ for the story slowing down!!)

First off, let me explain the lack of story..... latenight!
The heroine of the story is a very gracious person and devotes much of her time to a very worthy cause, the fight against multiple sclerosis. Their big function in texas is the MS-150, houston to austin bike race. Both our hero and herione have ridden this gauntlet in the past, but have now relegated themselves to volunteering, which, in retrospect is infinitely more work than riding. Maybe ill just ride next year.

Now, along with the MS-150 which was this weekend, the girl also has her biggest work even of the year the first week in may, SO they have not been spending as much time together, THEREFOR, Im sorry if the story has "slowed down" the girlfriend has not been staying over so life has been fairly uneventfull

So, where were we, oh yes, booze = new bull bar. If you had read the other post, you would see that a conundrum had presented itself. The bar needed to be mounted through the lower valance, where the tow hooks would be if there were tow hooks on his truck https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...tow-hooks.html
BTW, thanks for everyones suggestions. Now this new piece of awesome had to attach to the lower frame. Now I dont know about yalls trucks, but the front of the frame is almost completely obscured by the bumper. Some had suggested that it would not have to be removed, but he thought it infintely easier to just remove the front bumper to attach the L brackets.

Now, he has enlisted the help of a buddy with the promise that if he helps on the truck, our humble lead would help on his buddies VW 1.8T, and bring some beers (or vodka). Ill spare you the import talk, suffice to say, stripped bolts = vw still not running.
But the brackets are mounted and the bumper goes back on without to much pomp and circumstance. Now the options were to buy a new valance for ~$100 or just cut out the current one. Now heres where our heros infinite logic comes in. If he cuts the first one and it looks good, hes out nothing. If he screws the pooch, he can still buy a new one with the cutouts, back to square one. Out comes the dremmel.

Sorry for the bad picture, beers were involved. Cutting in progress

Braket exposed! Engage bull bar attachment sequence, GO!!

(I did polish it up a bit, dont worry.) Now, since TX is a two tag state, and the bar covered up the tag, some creative engineering had to take place. He could mount it on the front of the bar, but that would require custom fab work, or ugly zip ties. OR.....

Unbolt the plate, and put the bottom screws through the holes in the top of the plate brackett, GENIUS!! Now he gives credit where its due, and he must admit it was his buddies idea. And the drilled holes dont look so bad either

And I might be guilty of own horn tooting, but that looks pretty damn good.

Stay tuned, more to come from the weekend!

So friday night, our well worn wonderkid treks back home, filthy, famished, and falling asleep, but remebers to set his phone alarm for 9 a.m. so he can get out for his MS-150 volunteer post. Good idea and well intentioned, however, this would do him no good since he left his phone in the truck.

He opens his eye to the gentle rays of sun beaming through his window. "Odd," he thinks, "this room only gets sun starting around 11 am, holy crap!"
Springing to his feet like a sleeping cat that has just had a bucket of water dumped on it (trust me, they jump fast, and pissed) he frantically searches for his phone. 5 missed calls. Crap in a hat. Apparently his girlfriends car wouldnt start at 4 am, when she was getting up to go volunteer (early shift).

Now, she did have the wearwithall to get a jumpstart from a neighbor who happened to be up at the same time, but the battery was gone and simply needed to be replaced. So, in a stroke of genius not usually reserved for those who are prone to logical thought in the midst of panic, she realizes there is nothing she can do until the stores open and goes back to sleep. I know, Im just as shocked as you.

So 2 calls at 4:10 am, and 2 more at 7:30 from her, and one from her step brother cussing our forgetful friend because he was her next call at 7:30, and the voicemails have been taken care of by a few quick texts, now to haul a$$ to La Grange.

Now for those of you not familiar with the MS-150, its is the largest non-profit money raising bike race in the national, with thousands of riders. (dont quote me, but I'm about 90% sure) The first leg of the race starts in Houston and ends in La Grange. (yes zztop fans, that LaGrange) which is about 95 miles. The riders camp out overnight at the Fayette county fair grounds and get up in the morning and finish the last 70 miles to Austin. Now the quick witted will be asking, "But isnt 96+70 > 150?" and yes, yes it is. But the first race was not from houston to austin, and was, in fact, 150 miles. So deal with it.

So he makes it to LaGrange around noon, obeying all state and national laws, and reports to a somewhat angry girlfriend. Luckly she is way to busy to gripe. Now the girlfriend's sister works for the MS society and this is a huge deal for their whole family, so the whole family is there volunteering, so our hero joins the mother, grandmother, step father, step brother, and brother-in-law at the most covetted of volunteer positions.... the beer tent!

All riders are treated to a well deserved beer at the end of the first leg, so naturally we are the most popular volunteers at the whole event. Now the step brother is rightfully irked since he had to get up to help out his stranded step-sister oh so earli in the mornin. But our auspicous amigo is nothing if not charming and the girlfriends family LOVES HIM.

Side story, during one of the breaks our hero and herione took in their courtship, the woman got so tired of her family asking about him that she told her grandmother that our hero was addicted to drugs, just to get her to stop asking. Subsequently he made her tell her grandmother the truth, and she replied "Oh I knew that was a lie, he would never do something like that." (and no, I was not on drugs)

So, the beer starts flowing as the riders start the equivlent of staggering in, but on bikes. Now the volunteers are not supposed to drink, especially not while they are wearing the volunteer shirt. So asking our hero to serve ice cold, frothing, amber nectar without having one is like putting a bull in a china shop and expecting him not to buy a tea-cozy, or something like that. You get my point. So, to abide by all the rules and regs, after 5 hours, he take a break, fills up an empty soda can with a brew, and takes off his volunteer shirt. All on the up and up. That being said, he thinks it a good idea not to let it get out to the family, least it gets back to the girlfriend.

So, before filling the beer, he wait for the majority of the family to be off somewhere else. All thats there is the brother in law (cool dude, no worries there), another volunteer (a co-worker) and the grandmother in the back. Now the grandmother is getting up in age, and he thinks nothing of it. MISTAKE!

The old biddy might be getting up in the number and have one foot and the walker in the ground, getting ready to sluff off this mortal coil, but damned if she isnt still as sharp as ever. When the girlfriend walks off with the grandmother to get a snack, she comes back and says,
"Sweetheart, I am really thirsty, can I have some of your soda?"
"How bout some water instead, this is really cold?"
"No, I wanna try your pespi max."
The jig is up, first, she doesnt like sodas, second, she hates diet soda.
"I know its beer! Grandma told me!"

Grandma ratted him out! The shame and horror! You know this is coming back to plant some fangs on the ole keister. So he thinks he is in spending the night with Camille (his dog, as in, hes in the doghouse) and is kinda avoiding her. Well, the first night of the ride is nothing if not a party, the next days ride is seemingly forgotten, so the woman comes to fetch our friend to get some food. And just when he thinks he going to get an earfull, first about not picking up the phone at 4 am or 7 am and then for the beer, she, for the second time, shocks our seemingly unshockable lead man and says, "Let just go party, I was kidding about before, I was thinking about having a couple too just to get through the day!"

Gotta love this woman...... You gotta stay up pretty late in the evening to pull one over on ole FlashmasterK

Just to cover myself.....

The preceeding and following installments are fictious and purely for entertainment purposes. Any resemblance to events and people, real or imaginary is purely coincidental.

Just need to get back in shape before I try it. so far I'm up to 4miles in under 35 minutes. when i get up to 5miles in under 40 im going to start. but until then. I'm working on getting back into shape.
