Thanks guys
Chain with hook, make two wraps around hitch ball and hook goes on a near link. Other end of chain has it's own hook / hooks.

It's how I'ld hook up, don't need big clevis.

This is exactly what I'm trying to prevent. Chain and Ball equals disaster.

I currently have the reciever clevis 3'' 30ft strap and 1 1/4 '' clevis's . I'm ready

What disaster?

You must be doing it wrong then.

You said you were pulling damsells out of ditches in snow.

If you must have a clevis, any Farm and Tractor store or Farmer's co-Operative will have them in multiple sizes.

I have read and heard many horror stories of chains breaking and those hitch ***** breaking and becoming flying cannon *****. Hitch ***** are not rated for this type of use.

I've seen a lot of hard pulling with trucks, have seen smaller chain break, never seen a hitch ball break, nor 3/8 proof chain, seen trucks stopped dead, seen a Dodge 2500 recently pull and start hopping and break right front suspension ... but no damage to the chain or his hitch ball.

I've worked wrecks where trailers have flipped, tow vehicles flipped, class III and IV hitch recievers torn from frames or twisted, draw bars bent, couplers sprung or wreched from the trailer frame, but I've never seen a hitch ball fail ... not even no name ones of questionable source. You're gonna use a good one though, no doubt.

The chain is pulling around the narrow part below the ball, a trailer pulls up higher on the ball. You're just pulling cars from snow banks you said.

You want a big clevis just "because" ... fine, go for it. But to say you're worried about pulling a ball off a hitch? Not likely.

I think you heard a tall tale.

Suit yourself though.
