With regard to the "damsel in distress"...don't be so chivalrous and anxious to help. A couple summers ago I was in the same position. While cruising down the highway I saw a suburban in the median. This was summer and the roads were perfectly dry and free of debris. I thought that I'd be a nice guy and pull the person out. I figured that it would be nice if my wife was ever in the ditch or in trouble that someone would stop for her. Anyway, when I pulled up it turned out to be a woman and she seemed a bit disoriented. I could also see a crack in her windshield so I figured she bumped her head along with the shock of losing control and ditching the vehicle she was probably a bit confused. I asked her if she was alright and needed help. She said she was and she did. I pulled out my chain and hooked up to the back of her suburban. She got in and started it up and I gave it a little tug. Out came the suburban but she kept backing up. She ended up scratching my bumper (just a bit) with the chain. She apologized and unhooked then took off. As I was putting my chain away a cop came tearing a$$ past me and cut her off and stopped her. I thought, "uh oh". Another cop came up and assisted the other cop in literally pulling the woman out of her suburban at gun point. At this point I put two and two together and realized she wasn't disoriented...she was drunk (head slap!!!). I pulled forward to the second cop and told him I was the one who pulled her out and was just trying to be a good samaritan and asked if he needed to talk to me. He said no and that I was ok then sent me along.

The scary thing is...had the cops not stopped her and she hurt or killed someone I could have been the one responsible. I won't do this ever again.

Bottom line is to be very careful about who you help.

Check you local tractor supply stores. If you dont have them there look at you local farm and agg stores. You can also always check harbor freight or northern tools.

bdholsin, I had the same thing happen to me once!! I stopped to help an older lady on the side of the road. She had a tire that she had shredded and apparently had been driving on the rim for a good bit. I changed the tire, and as I'm finishing tightening the lug nuts, a Highway Patrol officer pulls up (I'm thinking he's a day late, dollar short) and apparently she had been swerving and bounced off a center median blowing the tire. She didn't seem noticeably drunk, but she was old so I probably assumed senility.

Here is one, its a little more expensive than othere, but it looks to be built better:

Yalls stories are great, but it does suck when you try to help and find yourself in a bind.

The Pro Comp at 4Wheel Parts is pretty decent as well...

The one at Harbor Freight is a LOT less expensive at $12.99 though. I am a bit concerned about the 10K weight limit on it...

I only help out my friends if they get into a ditch because if you help out a stranger and end up "hurting their vehicle" they could come after you. So I'll just wait with someone and wait for a tow to come by. I heard stories of that happening that's why I never do it.

Yet another reason I LOVE living in Texas. Good Samaritan laws...

I guess the only way around being responsible for hurting someones vehicle while towing them out of a bad situation is to have them make the connection to their vehicle. If there is damage then it's their fault.

That's the one I have and it's built tough. I have the receiver one and two more hanging from my front bumper.

Bout to order the one from 4 wheel parts myself. And with what everyone said earlier bout being liable for the hookup, I always make whoever I'm helping out hook up the strap themselves so its not my fault if they hook it up to something that will break off
