In 2005, I paid 528 bucks in Loveland (Larimer Co.) for registration/tags for the truck. This past year I paid around 310 bucks, so it does go down with age. A guy I work with paid the high price twice because he bought a 2008 model in 2007. That really sucked.

In CO, your vehicle is considered property (and is taxed). The flip side is really low real estate property taxes. The same sized house/acreage back in OH (were I grew up) would cost quite a bit more per year in taxes, but OH has decent registration fees on vehicles (no considered personal property). Six of one or half dozen of the other...about the same in the end.
It still goes down every year here in cali as well. What i mentioned above, was what was told to me by the good folks at the DMV.

I was told i was required to register it as a comercial viechle unless i put a camper shell on.

Hey Chaos
Hey Fish Chris... i do not know if you already know, but in cali a pickup with a open bed is considered a comercial viechle. Thats part of the reason for higher fees. If you put a shell on it the truck is no longer comercial. And fees drop.
Wow. No, I didn't know that. Now, I don't have a "camper shell" but I do have a fiberglass bed cover. I wonder if that would qualify..... OR, if they would need to actually see it ? I could show them a $1300 reciept for a "bolted on" fiberglass bedcover.

Anyway, thank you Chaos, I will look into this.

Peace,
Fish

In Maryland, I paid $450 which included titling and registration (2 years) after moving from NJ. So pretty close.

NJ considered all pickups commercial vehicles, I don't know about MD.

I would also like to know if a fiberglass bed cover would qualify as well. I need to lower my registration in any way shape or form.

80 something for 2 years.... damn, never knew they could stick it to you like that for something so little as a registration...

then again, they ruin our vehicles with all the road salt, so to drive in NY, instead of taxes, you pay in rust repairs...

this is something i read a while ago. Never actually looked so i do not know how true it is.

"Yes in CA every truck has commercial plate no matter if it is a 1/2 ton or a 10 ton truck.

You can tell by the count of numbers and letters on the plate. A truck has only one letter I believe and cars have 3 letters."

oh and i also read that if you change from comercial to non-comercial, you cant even haul a suit case in the back of your truck or you can be ticketed.

Do not no how true this is at all, but something to look into as well.

What exactly is the purpose in making commercial license mandatory for any uncovered pickup 1/2 ton or larger in CA? That just makes no sense to me at all...except for someone to make money. Are they trying other ways to wean you Californians off of gas guzzlers? Another sign that America is slowly going down the toilet at the hands of our law makers.

Oh yes because just packing up and moving because of registration is so easy to do now a days with the markets the way they are. Thanks for the great advice.

People are allowed to bit&h and moan about things like this, when myself and Fish Chris are paying over $400 a year for reg. and other states pay $10. And its NOT as easy as just "get over it or move" because moving.....costs money. Gasp, I know hard concept to gather, but it does. Plus what you save in reg. cost, they get you else where (like the gas tax). So there fore we can bit&h and moan (like the majority of America, IE political subjects especially) since that is our given right by the constitution (might wanna read it). Or you sir, can move and be free from our complaining.

Or wake up on the other side of the bed when your more cheerful and want to converse with the rest of the world in a dignified manner.

I forget what I paid when I had my truck registered in AZ...there was a credit, it got worked into the payment, etc. It was probably pushing $500 on a 2yr old truck that stickered for $41k. I do remember my 1yr old Mazda6 was $409 (tax return that year was $412...wohoo, I could buy a beer) and my 93 E350 Club Wagon with commercial tags was only $46. This year when I registered both the truck and 94 Miata with personalized tags it was only $80. Yah, I'm not a big fan of all the tourists and there's a LOT I miss about AZ, but having to give the state that much money for MY birthday really sucked.

What really doesn't make sense to me (there I go trying to make sense again when it comes to government) is that they're charging you out the a$$ to have a newer vehicle that's more fuel efficient, cleaner and better for the environment (I swear, I'm not a tree hugger) whereas it's cheap as hell to have some old beater from 1975 that has a cloud of smoke following it. Even in the 2 counties in AZ that do emission testing, cars are exempt once they reach a certain age and there are no inspections.

Here they just bend you over (from what I've heard) on homeowner's insurance if you can get it. Just pray for us during hurricane season. LOL

WOW!! That is insane!! Some have talked about how higher registrations can mean lower property taxes, I think that is false. Here are a couple of examples, one of them is mine and the other is my fathers.

I payed $90 for this years registration on my 04, thats class B plates (6000lb GVW), my property taxes this year were $1400. Granted my house is not worthy of a home show, but it is nice and totally remodeled, 1200sqft-2.5 car garage-and sits on 3/4 of an acre in the village.

My father payed somewhere around $220 for registration on his truck (05 F350), thats for class E plates (12000gvw). He paid $3100 for property taxes last year. His house is brand new (they moved in Sept last year) 1600 sqft-radiant floor heat-energy star certified-2 car garage, also he has a 50X80 shop (about 1/2 of which has radiant floor heat) and all this sits on 16 acres in the township.
