My 2004 FX4 Supercrew has been nearly flawless for 119K. Just had the plugs changed finally, put a new Pioneer DVD unit in last week, and it's still my favorite vehicle. I'm going to change all the fluids next month and install new brakes, and that will be the first round of maintenance it's had outside of oil changes every 3-4K and new oil, air and fuel filters.

I couldn't be more pleased with a vehicle, and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime in the foreseeable future. It's been garaged for all but 3 months since May of 2004 which has helped it stay healthy I'm sure, but still, it's been fantastic.

Since 04 it's had the following replaced:
Steering shaft
Transmission pump
Torque converter
Leaf springs/hangers and rear shocks
Both rear calipers
Passenger side ball joints
Rear axle bearings/seals
Drivers side exhaust manifold
Flexplate
And some other Misc. items

The first 3 items was covered under the previous owner the rest has been done in my 2.5 years of ownership along with some other Misc. items. It has 146,000 miles on it. I may get fed up with it and its problems but I don't think I could ever get rid of it.

Quick update on my '04... It's just about to turn 160k and about a year ago the 4x4 actuator bug got me so I had to replace the solenoid on the firewall and right front hub. Never heard a sound like that before lol and man was it a bear to drive having to stay in 4Hi all of the time just so it wouldn't make the sound. I've also developed problems with the door locks, instrument cluster, interior lights, and coil packs. Granted the truck had 150k on it before I replaced the first coil pack but since then I've had 3 more go down so I'm replacing them as my wallet allows. The door locks work and sometimes they don't. My driver's door lock tends to fail at the most inopportune times, when I'm in the rain or in a hurry or something. Last week the left rear door lock quick working all together and the door would not open at all, very scary given the right situation. The fuel gauge only goes to 3/4 tank now, it will not go to full no matter what I do. The oil pressure gauge jumps to half sweep as soon as the ignition is turned on. This makes me wonder how reliable the rest of the gauges are. The interior lights have a mind of their own. They flicker, don't work at all, or can work normally. One night I went outside to find the brake lights on and all interior lights on only to find that the doors were still locked, I thought maybe a possible intruder but chances are the door locks would've messed up and they wouldn't have been able to get in or out of the truck. This electrical gremlin has cost me a battery in the process of the malfunction. The other night I was heading into work from my lunch break and couldn't get my lights to turn off at all. They were totally unresponsive to the light switch or the key switch. I had to go so I had no choice but to leave them on. A fellow worker went outside an hour later and they were still on.

In all reality though this truck has "been there and back" so to speak and owning it almost 10 years now I'm still happy with how it's been compared to many of the horror stories my dad has heard being a mechanic. Cam phasers/timing chains, wheel bearings, rear ends, transmissions, and spark plugs seem to be the main problems IMHO. Come to think of it, it's time to change plugs again!

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned the window regulators. That's been my biggest problem. I've replaced three of the four. I've also just recently "refreshed" some of the old plastic (cowl, bed caps) with Plasti-Dip, but that's a cosmetic and not a functional issue. Everything else has been standard maintenance, other than that I had the plugs replaced at 50K rather than 100K because I was worried about the separation issue (none broke during replacement). Finally, I replaced the rear diff with 75w-140 synthetic due to that low speed shuddering issue. So far, so great!

Well, I finally hit 28 thousand. Oil and filter changes. Had one of the noisy alternators, replaced it. That's all! Going to have to replace the tires this fall. Plenty of tread, just getting old enough that I don't really trust them.

No plans to replace this truck. Gonna use it as a coffin. Dig a hole, put me in it, shove truck in it and cover. Wife says she's going to shoot me in the head before being covered up so when they finally find my truck, they'll have something to "investigate".

I'm the second owner of mine, bought it right at 50k. I know before me it has had both lower control arms done and brakes all the way around done under warranty. But since I've owned the truck it has been a rather PITA.
65k- rear spiders decided to grind themselves to bits replaced with limited slip, driverside hub, IWE solenoid, and actuator
75k- Dieseling started, passenger side hub, and IWE soldnoid again
80k- passenger side hub failed while driving (defective part from Sanels)
90k- new tranny (jasper replacement which is leaking...)
105k- phasers, vct solenoids, timing components, plugs 0 broke, starter
115k- passenger side hub AGAIN. Back to motorcraft parts.

Body wise it has a small rust spot right behind the passenger rear tire, not bad for a truck that old in NH.

I hate my Ford!
Every time something needs to be replaced, and I replace it with some parts from Harbor Freight or Really Cheap Parts or someplace like that, those stupid parts break and I have to replace them again! And it's Ford's fault!
Net time I'm gonna buy something different!

Never said I hate my Ford. I just think the previous owner beat the **** out of it. Beats my friends Dodge that's 6 years old and can't pass inspection cause of the body rot.
Sanel's is like the Napa of the area. I don't deal with my dealer, I'll buy parts online and have shipped if I can have the truck down for that long.

Turned 146K last week. Overall this truck has been the best I've ever owned. I haven't done anything to it other than oil for the past 5 years (2nd owner) and it's never had any major issues. I bought it with 90K on it and it runs perfect. Now that it's paid off I'm putting some money back into it to make sure it keeps going.

Replaced Pass. window regulator
New tires a month ago
New belt about 3 months ago
Changed plugs 4 years ago (two broke off in the heads, dealt with it, no probs since)
Changing rear axle seals and bearings tomorrow (leaking after 140K ok it happens)

Planning on doing brakes soon (4wd style hub upgrade in mind) and new shocks and struts after that. I love this truck and don't plan on getting rid of it (really hope I never move somewhere that will require 4wd). It's been a great truck, can't ask for anything better being almost 10 years old.

2004 F150 XLT S,crew 5.4 4x4 116,000mi.

I think i bought a lemon and was stupid enough to keep fixing stuff...lol. it is getting to be a solid truck again though. everything seems to hit at once and my pockets are about empty now from repairs. the thing that is getting me right now is the major bogging and no codes. ha, i have a 1998 blazer that doesn't give me this many problems. i have done and need to do too many things to list. but in the end i still love my truck and if i can get it back straight, i hope to have it for another 10 years.

Man is this thread a long one...I'd love to have a newer F-150 (especially a Ecoboost V6 model but my wife says she save $$ at my funeral by simply using the truck as my casket so I guess I'm stuck with the 04..lol

My 04 FX4 Screw with 105k miles is holding up fairly well. Had the plugs changed just recently (5 of the 8 broke during retraction). Now the old girl needs new brakes all around, wanna go with beefier rotors and pad upgrades due to the larger rolling rubber (33" all-terrains). I'm thinkin slotted (and possibly drilled) rotors, does anyone have these rotors installed on their rigs and if so what are your thoughts on them?

You're better off with stock style rotors and a good pad like Wagner thermo-Quiets
