FYI, for those interested in doing the Console/Shifter conversion.

If you don’t have the floor console wiring harness already in the dash I’ve updated the wiring diagrams at the end of my “Console Install” gallery. The new diagrams reflect info gained from member “ericd”, thanks Eric. So if you have downloaded the old wiring diagrams and instructions toss that stuff out and get the latest info.

If anyone needs the wiring info emailed to them just post a request to this thread with your email address and I’ll get it out to you as soon as I can.

Well, don't have the harness! I considered doing the wiring, but just not that interested at this point with a lift on the way next week.

What sucks is that I ordered a brand new shifter assembly...and threw away the box!!! I can return all the other trim pieces and such because they are still in the original box, but not the shifter *sigh* Guess I'll have to put her on Ebay!

I think the shifter cable may be on its way to our house already, maybe I can cancel the order first thing Monday morning. I also have two consoles - if anyone thinking about this conversion needs parts, just let me know Would also consider trades for XLT console!

I know that "gobra" is looking for a shifter. Maybe you can give him a call (email).

SCrew install 1/4 complete

I didn't see where anyone added this comment yet, so i will, even though this thread is getting long!

I installed my console (along with reverse sensors) today. The rear bracket went in just fine, front bracket had holes about 8" in front of front seat holes and covered with some sort of putty. However, the front holes were hex shaped and didn't have the threads in the hole (no nut). so i went to the garage and got a couple bolts and lock washers and it's in there! oh, i stuck that putty in the old seat holes that aren't used. I did have to move the fuel lines and heat shield to get to the bolts to tighten them, not much though. removed one bolt and a snap and they were out of the way for me to get my hand in there.

then i discovered that i don't have the shifter/power outlet wiring. i took the wire harness of the seat and used it - works fine. i guess i will have to do the wire conversion - has anyone found mating plugs or are you splicing wires?

still making the templates for the "gap", and FX4and HARLEY you were right, mine would be different! both sides close, but not exactly the same.

and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to MMMMEEEEEE!

As long as you don’t plan on going back you cut the red plug off the column shift lever. Then cut the gray plug from the harness at the bottom of the steering column. Use them to make one end of your new harness. The other end comes from the plug in the floor shifter harness mounted in the console. Once the harness is done it’s all plug in.

Okay, after reviewing FX4and HARLEY's gallery a few more times, I'm now enthused enough to try the conversion.

I'm working with a 2004 SCAB, so I'm a little nervous about re-wiring the shifter from the column.

Here's my question. Would the wiring work if I simply spliced into these wires and extended jumper wires down to the floor console? I want to keep the stock setup intact "just in case" so I can still drive the truck. Basically, I am fairly confident in my wiring skills (errr, at least my wire stripping and taping skills), but I'd hate to cut the harnesses completely off and then find out that I'm an idiot that can't get the cable to work or I messed up on the wires...

So, in summary, do you guys think a "jumper wire" setup would work alright (leaving the factory connections intact and adding a third wire in between each connection)?

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

That is basically what I did to wire mine up. I did cut out the little red connector on top of the steering column. The bigger grey connector under the steering column, I cut off the unused end of the wires, but left a couple of inches and tapped my new wires onto the end of them so that I could still have the whole connector there. I took 5 sections of wire and put them in some wire loom and then routed them as a whole through the dash and to just beneathe the steering column. Under the column is where I tapped into all of the various wires....I had considered tapping into them in the middle of the dash so that I would only have to run a couple feet of wire, but I decided to do it under the column so that I could physically trace each wire from the connector and be 100% sure that I was tapping into the correct one.

As far as the stock shifter cable....I still haven't removed mine..It's completely disconnected so that the old gear selector needle won't bounce around. I will probably remove it eventually, but right now I have the old trans end tied up under the truck so it won't fall down. I originally left it in just in case the new setup didn't work properly, then I could just hook the old one back up....but now I'm only leaving it in until I figure out how to fill in the old grommet hole..maybe the old grommet can be removed and used again without damaging it, not sure.

Thanks Shookman!

On a side note, how difficult was the actual shift cable to install? The diagrams looks simple, but when I honestly get under my truck to look for the "snap" connector, etc. I can't find anything. All I can see the little end link thing...

I'm just afraid of getting all the wiring done and then not being able to figure out how to install the transmission end of the cable. Then I would have a very attractive paper weight with 35s... but no functioning truck.

The new one installs VERY easily...the hardest part is getting the old one off. The end that connects to the transmission comes off easily, it's just the clip that holds the cable in place that is tricky. There are two little round nubs that clip into this metal bracket and you have to pry them both out at the same time before the cable will come free. This part might have been easier to do if I had jacked the truck up, but I wanted to minimize the risk of it rolling while underneath it so I just blocked the wheels and slid under to do the work.

Awesome job on your console

I couldn'y be happier that I found your post. NICE JOB again by the way on the console----
I have an 04 SCREW. It does have have the connector by the radio, Thank you to whoever pointed it out, I wouldn't have looked up there. It looks like under the radio you leave the pullout cup holder or has anybody tried somethingelse there. The only gaps I have to worry about is on the sides of the shifter ????

I am ready to start this project, all pieces now in hand. I want to know is after taking the columkn apart does it matter at this point what selector position that the old shifter is in ? --- for the steering lock (or) it might not start if not in the park position or (?)
Just trying to avoid some problems when I do the job
Thanks

As long as you unplug that gray connector at the bottom of the steering column and unhook the column shifter cable it won’t matter.
