Turbocharger for our trucks ???

I love turbos and i love the sound and power they make, i know there are about 4-5 superchargers for our trucks but i am wondering if anyone has seen a turbo kit ?

I believe sts turbo makes one for the f150. I don't think they advertise it though. It might be because another company sells it. I know of one member who put one on, but blew his engine recently.

I haven't seen any in person but I know Truckin' magazine featured James Hetfield's 04 supercrew with a vortech on it(volume 31, issue 5).

Considering our trucks...
  • redline at approx. 5k rpm (no real room for power)
  • we make 80% of our tq at low RPM (advertised)
  • normal driving is within 1.5-2.5k (the turbo isnt going to supply the tq a sc can)
  • hardly any room in the engine bay, you would have to remote mount it
By the time you finished your truck will still be slow but it will be making *cool sounds*

Turbos "can" make gobs of low end power. Ask any Turbo Diesel owner.

I was informed by a TD owner with the manual tranny that the turbo was useless for daily driving because right when he was about to shift the turbo started to finally spool up. And there is a difference between 19:1 compression on boost and our 9:1 compression we have on our gas engine.

I used to have a 6L PSD(played with it some) and my uncle has a 12V cummins that runs mid 12's....there are so many variables its crazy. Turbos can be built to spool quicker. It does not take near the time to hit....12(if that much) lbs boost as it does...depending, from 30-100 lbs boost either. I think turbos are the way to go, but the tuning can be a little tricky, and making room.

if you dont know what your talking about then hush,j/k.on a gas powered motor,9:1 is a great ratio to have,its just where you want it to not detonate.you cant compare a deisel to our gas powered motors.a turbo can be built so many different ways its funny,it can be built to spool before you ever hit 1500rpm.the reason you dont see many of them on our trucks is they are more expensive,you would need almost 2 of everything where as a supercharger you just need the one.i built custom kits for me and my freinds in my honda days,it took a lot of work,but we needed only one manifold to make it work.so cost was pretty much the same between turbo or SC.with a v8 the work doubles and the parts as well,but i gaurantee you if a kit was well built,it would smoke a supercharged one in a second.

I didnt say it was a a bad ratio, i was comparing two different engines against each other when someone brought up the turbo deisel.

You can compare them because they are both engines, thats like saying you cant compare your ford against my chevy because its a different truck.

If i could get an intercooled turbo on my truck, i would choose that over a supercharger anyday (intercooled or not).

I hate to say it but that is NOT a new body style FRAME on that truck. Nor is the suspension, or doghouse. That IS a mod motor, but it ISNT a stock internal engine. Might not even be a 3 valve.

First off, the lug pattern is a 5 bolt on that truck. The doghouse has a totally different set-up and the engine has different covers, intake and who knows what else.

It is a custom fabricated truck with a new(most likely fiberglass) body sitting on it.

Wont find anything similiar for our engines like he has.

Turbo is definitely the way to go......if they are available. A turbo can produce tons of low end power.
Just look at the turbos for the 2V 5.4. Over 400 rwhp and 500 rwtq @ 6psi. Full boost under 2k rpms. Try getting that with a supercharger.
Right now for the 3v though, I would go supercharger. It would take quite a bit more cash to get a turbo to run right.
If you are set on a turbo, talk to sts. If not, get a procharger, or a whipple if you don't mind waiting.

do you have any ideal how different the 2 motors are?deisels use compression like our trucks use spark plugs.compression is what actually ignites each stroke,unlike our motors that use spark plugs.they are 2 totally different sciences,apples and oranges.but you are correct,they are motors,like helicopters and airplanes motors,but totally different.
