Stalling
hi, my name is jim horrocks and i just bought an 04 fx4 from lehigh valley ford in pennsylvania. took the truck in to the dealer this morning and they couldn't get anyone on the tech/hot line. i left and brought the truck home and stopped by this afternoon while out on a motorcycle ride. they again tried to get thru and said the latest from ford is a reprogram of the pcm? does this sound right? the people on the f150 boards talked about a replacement....thanks for your help.
i just sent this message to another dealer to confirm....thought i would post the group.

jims94vmx, Yes I am the Service Mgr. My very own FX4 (of 3 weeks) had the stalling issue, the very first order of business was to hook the WDS to my truck, and found zero codes, then a call to the Ford Tech hotline netted us very little assistance (they had not had any other stalling issues out in the field) after replacing the Idle Speed Control Motor and the MAP sensor, we took a shot in the dark (with the hotlines blessings) and replaced the PCM, have been driving my truck now for a couple of weeks and happy to report my truck has not stalled out once! Good luck, my offer still stands for assistance with your truck?
thanks, service pro! i gave my dealer the link and your phone number. they are getting the truck monday when my wife drops it off. i will tell them again about your offer.....just wondering why the hotline told them to reprogram it? is that the newest latest fix? i sure hope so.....maybe they found the real problem in the pcm's recently and can fix this way???? we shall see. again thanks.
Hey guys, my 04 has been in the shop for stalling twice and still no fix after they reprogrammed my computer! It's going back today cause it did it again only worse and the wrench light and engine light are still lit. The wrench light says something about an electronic throttle or something, any help with?? I had to put the truck in park and give it gas just to keeo it running it was idling so rough at a stop light, there has got to be a fix for this, if they don't find the problem today, I'll be upset cause now my truck is giving a code since it has never acted up for them in the past!
Well, 18.000 kilometers and not any problems now the truck stalls for no reason!! It starts up again but it is now stalling a couple times a day, regardless of driving conditions or outdoor temperature. Truck is going in this week sometime to get this resolved. I will most likely print out this post to show ford that I am not crazy and this HAS happened to someone else. Thanks for this inavaluable thread!!!!!
just an update on my situation....as of this past monday the dealer had a the "newest" reflash sent to his dealership via satelite.....process took about 45 minutes and i have about 150 miles on the clock since with no problems! will post later this weekend when i have a couple hundred more! i also took this list to the dealer to get the ball rolling.....seems ford has a clue about this now! see ya, and thanks for this forum!!
Stalling
After having my new F150 Screw stall three times in two weeks, I printed out this discussion and went to the dealership. They researched the Ford reports and give this explaination and solution: The fuel tank vapor valve is currently programmed to open fully, which can cause stalling when at idle. The computer will be reprogrammed to open the vapor valve slowly or partially, preventing the stalling. Unfortunally, the garage had not yet received the new programing, so I have to wait until they get the updates by phone line. So Ford now recognizes the problem and hopefully has created the fix. My build date is 8/04. If others have the reprograming done, keep us all informed. Thanks!
My new FX4 now has 400 miles. It stalled several times in the first day. Now every stoplight it seems to unexpectedly drop RPM's from the 500 mark to the point its about to die and then the RPM's shoot to over a 1000 and back down to 500. It seems odd that Ford hasn't acted sooner to get out a service bulletin. I also have a build date of 8-04.
just a last update. i have had about 600 miles plus on my fx4 without any signs of stalling(since the reprogramming)! as of last monday i had the newest flash done on my computer from ford. it has worked like a charm.....i am now getting close to 1k miles total! what an awesome truck! thanks to the list and servicepro for coming up to bat for us! any questions don't hesitate to email....take care.
is everyone still "fixed"? just curious......about 800 miles and no stalling!! what a truck!

Newbie here
Great site, great thread
I had the same problem with a little miss and also having to hold the key over in the start position a little longer than normal. Took the truck into the dealer, they said they had never heard of such, called the hotline talked to an engineer, downloading the latest/greatest update and back on the road. No more stalling, no missing and cranks as soon as i turn the key. Great truck love it more everyday.
Again great site, thanks for all the help and usefull info found here.

Mine just started this too!
I've had my FX4 since last November, 13,300 miles, and within the last couple of weeks have had stalling issues. They tried to blame my KN replacement filter, which KN says is BS BTW, and "cleaned my mass air flow sensor" and recalibrated the PCM. Well the next day I stalled six times at one intersection. That intersection was right next to the dealership too! I will be back in the morning with all this info for them to digest while they fix my ride. Pretty much what everyone is saying...Idle issues at the stop, suddenly dying etc, etc.
Thanks for all the info everyone!
All good trucks have issues sometime, and this is still a great truck.
