Stalling

Hi all.

I got my new FX4 2 weeks ago and I've had intermittent problems with it stalling while I'm waiting for a light to change. Took it to the dealer and was told that they couldn't get it to stall but they've had a couple other folks who've brought in their trucks with the same complaint. They called Ford and were told to change the mass air flow sensor. Now I'm not terribly knowledgable about the workings of my truck so this doesn't really mean much to me. Anybody else had this problem? And did this do the trick? I'm hopeful but ill-informed.

And BTW, I love this truck! With this one exception, it's even better than I anticipated. Every time I walk away from it, I end up turning around to admire it. Can't believe it's mine.

it sounds like it could be a potential problem. it sounds like one of the sensors, and if ford says its the mass flow, then let them change it, no skin off your back. and it may fix your problem!!

Yes, they did replace it. I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and the same fix.

My FX4 with 400 miles on the odometer is stalling out at times when comming to a stop,It has stall out 4 times in the last 4 days, only stalls when the A/C is off, One of My Drivability Tech's hooked my truck to our WDS and found zero codes, After driving home from work tonight, It stalled two more times, I think it's time to call my Field Service Engineer to see if he has other dealers with similar concerns?

Have them replace the Throttle Body/Mtr Assy It gets Intermittent when warm/Hot. Stop and go traffic etc. I had mine in the shop 3 times for the same thing. Service mgr was finally able to duplicate the problem by tapping on the motor assy on the side of the throttle body. (Drive By Wire)and it died out when it was idling. or when it was dieing out tapped on it and brought it back to idle... I have a 2004 5.4 FX4 Good Luck..Mine also came up with no computer codes...

Just to let you know, I haven't had a single stall since Ford replaced the mass air flow sensor last week. Yea!

Well after the great help from my fellow F-150 owners on this site, and the help of the Tech Hotline, we have ordered a Mass Air Flow Sensor and a Throttle Body / Motor Asmb. We will install them tomorrow along with the Hotline's suggestion of checking the Fuel Purge Canister asmb. I guess I will have to be careful for the next few days. Hope this fixes my concern, Now I really know how my customer feel when they have issues, I will be more proactive in assisting them!

The MAF sensor can get gummed up by an over-oiled K&N filter. At least this is the case on the Mustangs and older T-Birds. However, I'm not sure if the location of the MAF on the F-150 would be affected.

The First time with the Engine Dying issue they had cleaned the MAF assy. Claiming the K&N Filter had caused the problem., So took the truck home Removed the K&N Filter installed Original OEM Ford Air Filter. and 2 Days later did it again. So back to the dealer they cleaned MAF again. Took truck home and the Next day Died again then they Ordered and replaced MAF and they got it to die after replacement of this part. And thats when they discovered The throttle body/Mtr assy was bad or intermittent. Problem Solved....

Angry Bad news

Damn truck stalled again -- this time in the middle of an intersection! I'm lucky the guy behind me didn't rearend me. That beast is a bear to maneuver to the side of the road without any power assistance. Got a call in to the dealer again. I'll let you know what happens this time. (I'll be sure to ask about the throttle assembly.)

Grrr...

My Idle Speed Control Asmb. should be here today. I will keep you posted as to the outcome of this repair. It will only take me one commute home this evening to see if this worked. My Ford FSE is also monitoring this repair attempt.

Servicepro,

I just got a call back form my dealer and he said that they received a tsb on this problem just this morning -- fix is supposed to be to remap the computer. So you might want to have your guys look at that, too.

Just an FYI. Good luck to you. I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us!

AKM, Thanks for the info. I also checked for TSB's as I do daily, I did not see any TSB's for our Stalling issues on the '04 F-150. That's not to say that maybe Ford just released it within the last 8 hours. If you could check with whom ever at your dealer, maybe you can post the TSB # for us. I did have one of my Driveability techs install the new Idle Speed Motor asmb. and a new MAP, Afterwords I drove my truck and performed 3 WOTs (wide open throttle) runs to set "re-learn". I will post my findings when I get home, My commute home will be the road test to see if this fixes my concern.

Road tested my FX4 home last night after replacing the Idle Speed Motor, The truck did not stall out, but once, maybe twice my idle dipped or rolled like it tried to stall, but the idle caught it's self? Im not convienced just yet that my concern is fixed, I drove the wifes Lincoln LS in today, so I will have to wait to put more miles on my truck. Bottom line here is that Im kind of disappointed about this and will be on my FSE's back today when he comes into my Dealership, Im still a Ford lover, and always will be!
