Unhappy Happy Birthday to me..

Well, guys.... Happy 25th to me..

Here is what my 3 week old truck looked like yesterday morning:

And here is what it looks like this morning:

Thanks to a 21 year old driver that was paying more attention to the radio than the red traffic light, I'm out a 3 week old truck. But, most importantly, everyone was okay, and I escaped with just a bruised knee. It looks like it also incurred some frame damage, so I am greatly hoping it is totalled.

I also had $700.00 in extras (Line X bedliner, window tint, nerf bars, etc.). Does anyone know off hand how I can recoup these losses?

Best Regards,
-Justyn

HOLY HELL!

I am glad you're ok! Man, that's a hard hit.

As far as your aftermarket items, you'll need to notify the insurance company handling the claim. They owe to put you into preloss condition, meaning pay to have your truck repaired back to the safety/function/appearance before the loss, or, cut you a check and let you go buy one just like you had.

I doubt you'll get dollar for dollar what you paid for those items, but they will be taken into consideration.

Did he broadside you and force you into a phone pole?? I see this stuff everyday, but it really hits home when it's a truck similar to mine. Hope everything is handled quickly for you!

Yes indeed, after he hit me on the passenger side, I then slid into a power pole, which proceeded to knock a line down, which proceeded to knock the power out to most of the surrounding area. I got out just in time before the line fell down and started sparking.

The air bags never deployed -- is that normal?

Cheers,
-J

On your behalf, I'm sick. There are no words for your loss.

"Does anyone know off hand how I can recoup these losses?" ... go after his insurance company. They need to pay for more than just the blue book value on this one. You only had it three weeks! With such a high value already, they should give in to your additional $700+/-. You may need to retain a lawyer to get it right. I can't advise you either way on that one. Good luck.

We're seeing it more and more in newer vehicles. It doesn't seem right to some, but what manufacturers are telling us that if a passenger/driver is properly belted in, the airbags will not deploy. Sometimes they can cause more injury if they do deploy, rather than staying put. Not to mention the couple of thousand dollars it costs to replace them. When they do deploy, it's highly unlikely that we can just replace the unit itself. Most of the time it takes out the entire dash and windshield.

There are sensors all over the seat that actually tell the truck how much you weigh, where you're sitting on the seat, whether your seatbelt is buckled, etc. A LOT of R&D went into this. They can even control the force at which the airbag deploys.

Without seeing under the hood or the undercarriage, it looks like a total to me.

Man, seeing a great looking truck like that get wrecked is like seeing someone beat a dog...it just sucks. Glad you are OK. Well at least if you had any buyers remorese after 3 weeks you can do it over again. My brother got wrecked a few years ago by some dumb kid trying to put his shirt on while he was driving.

Very interesting info, thanks. Fortunately, I always wear my seat belt, so that definitely saved me from some headaches today (literally).

I should know within the next 24-48 hours as to whether it was totalled or not (keeping my fingers crossed).

Key word, "may". I wouldn't jump in that boat yet. Attorneys really don't help that much on a property damage claim. Wait and see what the insurance company tells you. If you go 'round and 'round with them, you may want to consider it. If you get one for your injury, say good-bye to 1/3 of your settlement...that's the norm for their fees.

What part of Pensacola are you in? We have a condo on Pensacola Beach right behind Peg-Leg Pete's.

I am assuming the accident happened in Pensacola? If so, where?

You lucky guy! Been to Peg Leg Pete's many times, great place! I actually live near the University of West Florida, about 20 minutes from the beach.

Socrates,

Sorry for the loss of your truck, and I too would want it to be totaled. I am glad no injuries occured.

Just wondering, how fast were you driving when you were hit, and how fast would you say you were going when you hit the power pole?
