Anyone else getting a "whine" at 55-60mph?

I notice I get a pretty loud whine around 60mph in my '04 4.6. It goes away if I put it in neutral. Anyone else have the same noise?

thanks

Oh yes, but mine is 50-55 under acceleration, will be doing some driving around tomorrow and Monday into the dealer to see about getting it fixed along with the slight shudder when turning from stop when cold..

5.4 with 3.73LS Diff. Downloaded the Workshop manual and it is probably the ring/pinion that need replacing. And boy I hope the dealer has a good axle rebuilder looking at all the adjustments and stuff that need doing!

Rick.

My truck went in today for the infamous whine between 50-60mph coming from the rear end that occurs when the throttle is open and goes away when the throttle is closed. I haven't had a chance to meet face to face with the service advisor yet but basically he told me on the phone a "good number" of the parts in the rear axle have been ordered and will be replaced. I'll post more about the parts list when I find out what they are replacing when I go in to pick up my truck on Thursday.

Basically, if you are experiencing a similar whine around 50-60mph, take your truck to the dealership as its coming from the rear axle. My truck by the way is a 2004 F150 FX4 with a 3.73 limited slip axle.

I was just going to start a thread about this. Mine wines between 60 and 75 mph, only when held at a constant speed. It only has 2500 miles on it and I noticed it about 1000 miles ago. I also have the 3.73 limited slip rear axle. I'll have to get this looked at when I take her in for an oil change and to get the dome light looked at. It flickers on and off (I am going to start a thread; seems similar to the door switch problem on earlier models.) Let me know what the conclusion is to the whine problem and what needs fixin.

I documented the same issue and resolution in https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...hreadid=156396

Short version - new ring and pinion fixed it.

Ok just got call back from dealer, they will be replacing the ring and pinion. He said the nut back off and made wear marks. I'm no mechanic, but he said they checked clutches and nothing is wrong. I never had vibrations so I hope this wil be it. I still like this truck. Getting truck back on Friday will let ya'll know.

Hey guys, I am "suppose" to maybe get mine back by Friday. Its been in for the "nibble" and also the whine from 50-53. The Ford Hot Line let them replace the rack to fix the nibble. It didn't. So they TRIED to use the only other 18" truck tires and wheels that they had on the lot, but he said that NEW truck was worst than mine with 5000 miles. Soooooooo, Friday they are putting on 4 new Goodyears. (The only LT tire replacement available)

They also told me today that Ford WOULD NOT allow them to work on the rear noise. They cited that the Ford Techs said it was NORMAL unless it got worst and that other repairs had not worked as they had planned.

As of Friday my ride would have been gone ...10 days (when the new tires arrive) but her I can still vist her at : https://www.f150online.com/galleries....cfm?gnum=3309

Hey bvfd10 my sevice guy said the nut wasn't tighten from the factory and backed out. Like I said I'm no mechanic so I really don't understand. Will get details Friday. If it whines its not normal. Possible could cause more damage. Good luck

PLEASE let me know, I am going to keep an eye out on this and if it get louder. (not really bad now) its going back.

I dont think it had it when it was new, but I am not sure. It might had started when they changed the clutches in the rear to fix the shutter. (they DID fix that) .

Acutally the tires on my 97 were louder at times, but its not exactly to my likeing.

Thanks

Took mine in 3 times for vibration and a whine at 72mph. They replaced the entire rear end assembly. The whine is now gone but I'm waiting for the Ford Rep to look at the vibration which is at 20 an 45mph. I just want it all fixed so I can start my mods

I took mine in for the 55-65 mph whine. Got it back today and the list of parts replaced was pretty long but mainly consisted of the ring and pinion. All related bearings and spacers and doodads were replaced also.
The whine was there from day one but really started to get annoying about 3500 miles. I finally couldn't take it any longer at 7200 mi. so in it went.
