Is the VSS supposed to be run off the trans on the V10s? Or is it in the diff like our trucks are?

I THINK that if it's a 4x4 it runs off the transfer case, but after lots of reading, I'm still not sure. I do know there is no difference between V10's and V8's. I also know that the VSS is sending a proper signal because my scanner will continue to show the vehicle speed after the odometer goes to dashes.

My guess is the Speedo is not communicating with the SD Computer properly, that would explain the theft light and the speedo not working right.

did you ever have the PCM programed to the truck? Possibly just a conflicting VIN issue

I called two Ford dealers and they said there is nothing they can do.

Last night I made some clearance for the A/C compressor. You can see in the first pic where the compressor scraped a little line into the idler bracket. I'm not happy with the results, but considering the cramped quarters, it will have to do. I decided I better add some reinforcement after all that material I removed. If I had done this with the engine out, I could have been more surgical about where to remove metal. I hope the first pic will help future V10 swappers see where they need to modify the bracket.

Those welds are funny, I was using my stick welder because my wire feed is too weak for the job, and there was so much smoke coming in my face from the position I was in, I was welding blind. I went "off road" a few times with the rod.

So now that I have driven the truck around a bit, I must say the V10 has no top end. It takes no throttle to get it moving, but after a couple of full throttle runs, it's no faster than my 5.4. I'm hoping that's transmission related since it is still acting wacky because of the PATS thing.

What are the numbers on a v10, 350hp or so? They should have a mass of tq I would guess. Should be a big difference over the 5.4L Wait till you get all the bugs worked out.

i highly doubt this is even worth typing, but could you put a dash panel from a 97-98 f-150 to get rid of the pats issue, or will it prevent the truck from even starting?

I have looked into that. It APPEARS that the 2002 Super Duty cluster MAY work based on pinout comparison - just found that info this morning.
EDIT: Nope - had an incorrect diagram.

I bought an Excursion V10 PCM for $100 today. It will be another $100 to get it programmed for PATS. Not too bad. Only $200 in unexpected expenses - assuming this fixes the speedo thing.

I installed the PCM for testing and as expected, it cranked, but would not start and my scanner detected no DTC's.

I'm curious what kind of result would be had if a V-10 was going in a non-PATS (97-98) truck.

I think it depends on the PCM. I'm sure it would run, but I think the cluster gets a lot of its info from the PCM so I don't know if the gauges would work. I don't know for sure. I'm not even 100% sure the Excursion PCM will resolve my final issues. I bet you coul at least swap sensors to get it to work. Someone else will need to go down that road. My journey is almost complete.
