I would assume they will only reimburse you for the straps and labor, not the tank.

Fuel Tank Replaced

Has anyone who's had a leaking fuel tank due to the rotting strap had any luck getting Ford to replace the fuel tank? So far, I'm not having much luck.

In the beginning of July, I noticed a broken fuel tank strap hanging underneath the truck. At that time, there was no mention of a recall, so I replaced the strap. While replacing the strap, I noticed how rotted the tank was underneath the strap. Sure enough, a couple weeks later, the tank started leaking. This was also when I heard about the strap recall. I visited my local dealer a week or two later to explain my situation. They said that I was still entitled to two new straps, but I'd have to wait until mid September when the parts came in. When I mentioned the leaking tank they said that, if they confirm that the fuel tank damage was due to the defective straps, they would submit the claim to Ford and I would be entitled to a new fuel tank.

Fast forward to yesterday now, when I brought my truck into the dealer. They replaced the straps, but said they would have to photograph the tank, submit the photos to Ford, and wait for approval. Ford replied, denying the request. I appealed to Ford's central Customer Service department, but to no avail. After speaking to the initial rep and the supervisor, they could only tell me that Ford was not approving fuel tank replacements as part of this recall.

What I'm struggling with is why I'm responsible for paying for a new fuel tank replacement as a result of Ford screwing up their straps. Has anyone else had any better luck than me? Any suggestions?

That's not good. I had to replace a strap and tank a year ago. Your experience makes me think I have no chance of reimbursement.

I'm in the same boat as you. I had my straps replace last Nov and the tank started to leak when they took them off. At the time I couldn't afford to fix the tank so I had to drive it for another month but as long as I kept it to about 1/4 tank it didn't leak. When I spoke to the dealer about the strap recall and I mentioned the new tank he said without visible proof or the original tank there was no way Ford was going to pay for the new tank.

If your tank falls and hits the ground due to a corroded strap, I believe Ford will do a new tank.
If your tank is leaking, knock it down, wire it back up and take it to Ford, I'll bet you get a new tank.
