Well, I took the tailgate plastic part off, scrubbed it down with dawn dish soap and a green scuff pad. Sanded it down with 800 sand paper, then with 2000 sand paper, hosed it off, dried it, primer twice, and then sprayed a few coats on it. I don't know what 'light' coats mean, when I spray, I use half the can! So, this what happen, the paint ran in a few spots, and I accidentally ripped part of the paint at the bottom. So, now I'm just going to leave it alone, wake up tomorrow morning and spray a clear coat on it, and put it back on my truck, and then after work, start on the sides. Let me know what you think of this little spot, to me it actually looks good if you're not looking very up close at it.

The dark/light next to the chipped area, I believe that is just dew from outside, since its cold out.

when i did mine, i started with 80 grit, then went to 120, then 180, then wetsanded with 1000 then wetsand with 2000.

It's not smooth, still has those little bumps that came on it. I'm no professional, but it looks decent to me. I took pictures this morning and I'll post them up.

No I just wanted it painted. How do you apply light coats?

well with spray paint, the easiest way to explain is...spray from a good distance 6-12". and don't go down the surface slowly, this lets the paint build up which causes the runs. so go down it in 1 smooth quick motion. not rapidly, but quickly.... get it? so instead of 1 thick coat, apply three light coats for example.

Alright thanks, I'll try it out. Is there a way to remove build up, or would I just have to start over?

Well, here's the new paint job. Not the best, but looks good to me.

Tailgate:

Left Side:

Right Side:

Next will be the step side and bumper plastic once I learn to take it off.

That's a really clean truck man. A set of 20" L wheels would look awesome

Thanks truckguy, I'll look into it. I'm kind of waiting due to the fact I got new tires like a month before I came home from Iraq. Can't have $1,000 of new tires go to waste.
