I doubt you hear your valves. What engine is in your truck. Discribe the noise better. Is it at engine speed? or is it half that speed... the cam turns half the speed of the crank. You didn't give much info.. so hard to troubleshoot here

likely piston slap.. is it a 5.4? if ur valves are ticking... it will only do it for a short time like couple RPM.. then the valves will chip off and the motor wont have enough compression to keep spinning

I thought I had the same problem, and after reviewing this site, which by the way is a great help, noticed it was the piston slap. But after a further investigtion, found out it was the rod bearings, replaced all of them and now working fine. the problem I had was during cold startup would hear what I thought were valves, also would hear it under hard acceleration, around the 3500rpm mark, but again fast or hard acceleration. If you do a search on the 5.4 and piston slap you'll find much on this, but don't let it fool you into not looking into it being something else.

Then it is detonation (pinging) and not mechanical. Valves and rocker arms do not care about octane.
A new truck should not be pinging like that, head on back to your dealer and see what they say.
