04 f150 fx4 tranny swap

I have a 2004 f150 fx4, lost overdrive, so i went with the rebuilt replacement. When i got the truck back i noticed they installed a 4r70w. I had to take the truck back to them because the transmission was slipping and slamming into 2nd and 3rd gears. It didnt happen every time, but it happened often. So i guess my question is; was the 4r70w the right thing to do? Or should it have been a 4r75e?

Thank you.

what engine in your truck?

2004 is the change over year, 4.6L trucks got the 4R70E, 5.4L trucks got the 4R75E. The ONLY difference between the 2 transmissions is the 4R75 got a hardened planetary gear and is rated for more torque.

externally, the transmission look the same

My truck has the 5.4. My biggest concern is that i pull around a 29' camper with this thing, so the last thing i need is an underrated tranny. so would the 4r75e be the way to go?

If both transmissions have been rebuilt with stock parts and specs, you need the 4R75. However, if a 4R70 is beefed up it should be just as good if not better.

Well, I just talked with the transmission shop. He said the 70w is what was in the truck already? They did not have any rebuilt in stock so they rebuilt mine. Now they are taking it back out to address a pressure problem. Hopefully better luck this time around.

Heritage or new body style? The Heritage had a 4R70W regardless of engine.

It is new body style. Maybe built early enough in the year to get the 4r70w?

Not an issue if they are rebuilding yours. Curious as to why they have a pressure problem though.

That was his guess as to why it wasn't working right. I will post what they find.

Nah, they know if it's a pressure problem or not. There is no way in the world they would pull a transmission out of the vehicle to check that. It only takes minutes to put on a gauge and check pressures with the transmission in a running vehicle. It takes hours to pull the transmission and then you definitely can't check any pressures without putting it back into the truck or onto a transmission dyno. A transmission dyno isn't going to give you what it's doing in the vehicle and most places don't have one.

They know whats up. Either that or you need to go get your truck.
