Slipping Transmission

I have a 1994 ford f150 2wd 5.0 liter. I recently replaced the engine. Thats when my problems started.

After I got the motor in I took it for a test drive. The transmission was fine at first but the more I drove it the worse it got.
First thing it does is the reverse gear is almost non existent. I have to rev the motor really high for it to catch and go.
Second, when going at high speeds then started to slow down the truck seems to surge trying to downshift. On take off i can tell its slipping as well.
It only seems to get worse as the truck gets warmer.
I have dropped the pan and replace the fluid and check the filter. That seemed to help for a day or so but now im right back to where i was.
I never had any problems with the transmission before the motor change.

The only thing I think might of happened is the tranny dropped down while on the jack (jack lost pressure) it may have been like that for a few days.

Can anyone shed any light on the situation for me? thanks

Don't know but Crown Vic's had a trans cable that would break off at the throttle linkage and cause problems.Don't know if you have one or not, if you do make sure its hooked up!

trans pump could have gotten damaged when the torque convertor was hanging in the trans w/o motor & flex plate being bolted together.

Man, that really sounds like low fluid level symptoms. Particularly when you are saying it worked at first after the swap and then again after you dropped the pan and re-filled.

Whatever the cause, it sounds like a fluid pressure or flow issue.

agreed, sounds like a low fluid, low line pressure issue.

check the PCM for any stored trouble codes.

did you fully seat the torque converter in the front pump?

Yeah the fluid level was the first thought for me as well but its fine. are they're any vacuum hoses that go to the tranny that might have came unplugged? I didnt have to take the torque converter off so im not sure what you mean by seated the converter on the front pump. it was my first engine swap so it might be possible i missed a step?

My oil pressure gauge is low, is that tied to tranny as well as the engine?

It does really seems like a fluid issue.....just stumped

The gauge is engine oil pressure, has nothing to do with the tranny. Do you have a 4R70W or E4OD?

Did you check the fluid level with the trans warmed up and the engine idling in park? If not the reading you have is meaningless.

No, there are no vacuum connections on the transmission.

If the converter was pulled forward as little as an inch it could have disengaged from the pump. That would keep it from driving the pump.

the TC is in the right place when the trans ,motor & flywheel are all bolted together. IF you had a hard time bolting them together, you could have caused damage to the pump in the trans! Old parts do not like to be disturbed.
