What's leaking?

I changed all my rotors and pads with Calahan (think of Tommy Boy) rotors and pads in late April and put brake quiet on the pads. Lately though there has been a squeak coming from them though during the first couple stops after starting up then it goes away. So yesterday I crawled under to see if I could find anything. I found this where it seems to be leaking on the left rear wheel, since then when I start up I roll down the window to see if its just this wheel that squeaks at start up but I can't tell. The leak area is on both sides of it and not just the side in the picture. Would this be the cause of the squeak? What could have caused this leaking and is it a simple repair? Thanks for the help

Looks like the axle seal. Search the articles and how to's there are a few write ups on changing the seal. It's not that hard depending on your skill level and tool collection.

Consider putting new bearings and races in at the same time. Over time as the bearing collapse and wear down they elongate the hole and will make it easier for the fluid to leak. The leaking seal is likely a symptom and not the root cause.

The race is a hardened steel insert that's pressed into the axle tube and it provides a good surface for the bearing to ride against.

In most cases it's a good idea to replace bearing and race at the same time and quite often they come as sets in the same box.

I'm looking at RockAuto right now and not sure what to get for the bearing and I'm not sure if the racer comes with it. There's one at the bottom of the list that is an "oversized" one to compensate for the worn down shaft, is that worth looking at? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,1664
I have an 05 Lariat 2wd with 5.4, I don't know the wheelbase or if it has a limited slip, I just learned about most of that today. Thanks for the help.

The bearing for that doesn't have a separate race.

It looks like this:

EsJayEs do you have the part number for that? Or is that one you just randomly found and isn't a fit for my truck?

I've done a seal on mine a while back and it is probably due for bearomgs soon (275000 miles).

You will need a bearing puller to get it out of the axle housing, free rental at Auto Zone or O'Riley's. You will also need to drain the diff fluid and remove the cover to get the axle shafts out.

I believe the 8.8 is a little different process than the 10.25 diff. Also the limited slip is a tad different than the open diff. Just make sure you know which one you are working with before you start so you get the right parts.

If you cruise the DIY's I think there is a write up for either one. Quinten I think is the author of a good one. Check them out and I'm sure tha guys here can walk you through it.

I think the bearing that EsJayEs posted is the style you will be looking for.

Good luck, it isn't too hard of a job.

I've been doing more research, took off the hub tonight and smelled like death on the other side so its a leak. How do I know if I have an open or limited diff and whether its 8.8 or 10.25? I found Quintins post and its very helpful I'll follow the steps based on my diff, looking online for all the parts now.

Since you have the 5.4L engine without the HD payload package (HD has 7-lug wheels), your truck has the 9.75" axle. R1561TV is the SKF/National part number for the bearings. The bearings and seals are the same whether you have a limited-slip or an open diff. Either way you'll need three quarts of 75w-140 Synthetic gear oil.

Thanks all for the help today I'm ordering the seals, bearings, new diff cover cause mines rusting and gear oil. I'll also be getting a quality 2 ton floor jack after my stock one turned on me.

Now I may need to get a new rotor but I didn't hear it having any noises this morning so it may be fine, I still have some brake pads in stock if the gear oil has ruined the ones currently on.
