Don't forget the friction modifier if you have a LS axle

Friction modifier isn't necessary with most of the Synthetic gear oils out there. But to identify if you have a limited-slip, look at the axle code on the sticker inside your driver's side door. If it is a letter and a number, it's a limited-slip. If it is two numbers, it's not.

That said, it doesn't hurt to add it. But most synthetic gear oils have this included as part of their additive package, so it's not necessary. You'll know because it'll say on the bottle. Some differentials still need to have LS additive added anyway. I've never ran into this issue on a Ford limited-slip though.

Yea right now I'm trying to weigh my options, I have jack stands but not a good floor jack to get the rear axle up. So I'd have to get:
Floor jack ($120)
at least 3 quarts of gear oil (Mobil $20/each)
Bearings x2 ($64)
Seal x2 ($18)
Replace rusted diff cover ($40)

So that's about $300 right there and one shop quoted me $350 for just the seals, since this is my last week before I head back to school I'm considering letting them do it because I may not get to it and if I mess it up there I'm stranded pretty much. Does anyone know the labor cost website to see how long it should take them?

Edit: Another local shop just quoted $175 for the whole job so I'll most likely do that. Thanks all for the help and advice.

You don't have to replace the cover. They're made of steel and will eventually develop rust. You can strip it with a wire brush on an angle grinder and paint it, or not worry about it.

But if you are going to get a new one, might as well upgrade to an aluminum cover. You can use one from a 2011+ SuperDuty with the 9.75" axle. They're aluminum and reasonably priced.

Yea I know I don't have to replace it but since this shop is much cheaper I may look into a better one!
