Tire question and help

I have a 2007 FX4 with a leveling kit. I have P275/55/R20 Pirelli Scorpions. I want to upgrade to 305/55/20 Nitto Terra Grappler. Will I have a rubbing problem? The Pirellis are good tires but don't look mean enough for me. I want something more aggressive with some tread that look sweet and are bigger. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

If you stick with the stock rim you will get a little rubbing on the control arm.....
if you go with after market wheels stick to something with a 5.5" - 6" Back Spacing.

Tires:
Try looking at the Trail Grapplers .... if those are too aggressive I recommend Goodyear Duratracs or Procomp Xtreme All-Terrains

I have aftermarket wheels on there. They came with the truck. I bought it used. If I stay with 5.5" - 6" back spacing I won't run into any rubbing? This is my everyday truck so I need something that will give me some mileage. Uin2it.......you don't like the terra grapplers? I know the trail grapplers have some sick tread on them, but not sure about the road noise.

Going to a larger tires and more aggressive tire will not be good for your gas mileage. It is going to affect your mileage for sure. It is a trade off. Sweet looking truck, or mileage.

i realize that the gas milage will go down. not worried about that. But I want it to look tuff. I just don't want the bigger tires to create any rubbing that may cause damage and be even more expensive.

As long as its just rubbing lock to lock not a big deal. Mine rubs that way and i just have to remember to not turn as tight. I guess it depends on where its rubbing. If its fender rubbing then that will be an issue.

Derrick@TireRack - when does a tire rub on the control arm? can a tire that is too big rub on anything else that could cause more damage?

The rubbing issue on the control arms usually happens at full steering lock when using a large tire. The rubbing is very slight and isn't enough to damage anything. The 305/55-20 Nitto Terra Grappler would be an excellent choice.

thanks Wandell. I'm gonna go with those. I have the stock 275/55/20 Pirelli Scorpions on now, but those won't do me any good this winter. I live in Iowa. So I need something that will get me around in some serious snow and bad weather.

Digging up an old post as I search the forum - question to the original poster - Do you know how much level you have on your truck?
I too have a 2007 with the Pirellis and am looking to get new tires (the Nitto Terra Grapplers). I am still trying to decide if I should get a 2" (+/-) level kit and go up in tire size or just replace the tires with the original size (275/55-20).
Thanks!

I have a 2" leveling kit. I put on 305/55/20 Nitto Trail Grapplers. They are bad to the bone and I love them. No rubbing. Very close to the control arm but doesn't touch it that I know of so far. A little hum on the interstate and a little squirley above 75mph. Other that that I love them. Great in snow also.

The Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac's would be a good choice for tires. Good Snow traction and rugged looking tire.
