Question 285 vs 265?? Please help

I am looking to buy a set of tires for my stock wheels to run in the winter. The two sizes that I am sure will work are 265/70/17 and 285/70/17 for my 06 4X4 reg cab. The problem is that I need some feedback on guys who have these sizes and also some pictures as well. Please post... thanks

I'd go with 285's or slightly wider.

I just put 285 70 17's on my truck for winter and they look and fit perfectly. I also had 285 75 18's on in the past and they were 35.1" high and fit with no rubbing.

I have Toyo Open Country MTs, 285/75 R17s.... They are 34.1 inches tall... I have a 2" leveling kit...

The following image shows the difference between 265s and 285s...

If you run in snow, taller, skinner tires work better than wide tires. I put on some 255/75/17's which are a little taller and narrower than the first ones ones you mentioned but slightly shorter than the 285/70/17's. These were awesome last month when it dumped 12" of wet sloppy stuff in the North Cascades. The pic is of a much smaller, more recent snowfall.

As an added advantage, the narrower tires have less rolling resistance and I'm getting great range on a tank of fuel.

That comparison is a little misleading because the image halves are done to a different scale (the rims and truckbed are both taller on the right half).

Also, because it's a side view it's mostly the difference in sidewall height we are seeing, not the width. So I'm wondering if the 265's have the same 75 aspect ratio as the 285's do? To my eye, they look like 265/70's.

Both pictures were taken from the same place on my deck... One image is just flipped... The **** Cepek Mountain Cats are 10.5 inches wide,265/70 R17s while the Toyo Open Country MTs, 285/75 R17s are 11.6 inches wide... Look at the space between the top of the wheel and fender flares... The Toyos are 2.1 inches taller and thats a fact...

I thought they looked like they were only 265/70's.

I'm not doubting they are 2.1 inches taller but the picture makes it look more like 4 inches taller (or more). That's because the truck is larger in one picture, that's all.

If you're looking for tires that will work well in the winter, you should definitely consider a set of 265/70/17 or 285/70/17 tires. These tires are specifically designed to provide excellent traction and grip in all kinds of winter weather conditions.

In terms of tires comparison, both of these options have their own advantages and disadvantages. The 265/70/17 tires are slightly smaller than the 285/70/17 tires, which means they may not provide as much traction and grip on icy or snowy roads. However, the smaller size also makes them more lightweight and easier to handle, which can be a big advantage when driving in winter conditions.
