Piston will not retract?

Piston will not retract?

Replacing front pads on 04 f-150 used a c-clamp one of two pistons went in on caliper. Other one will not go in at all. Some fluid leaked around top of the rubber boot. Any ideas?

Try removing m/c capand put the old pad in and then use the clamp.That way u push both in at the same time. Make sure they go in straight not crooked.Use two clamps if needed.

Both pistons must be pushed in at the same time! If you push in only one the pressure will push out the other one but I dont think you could break it. Just push in the "stuck" one untill they are equal and then as said use an old pad and put the clamp on pad inbetween both pistons and all should go well.

Cap is removed one piston in and stays in other will not budge, Originally push just one in and other pushed out. Push back in and tried C-clamp it will not budge

Have a similar problem with the dual pistons (though mine's a '98). I'm sure my problem is a stuck caliper-- went through a new set of brake pads on the driver's side front like newspaper in the last 4 months--less than 3000 miles. Question is: can you still get caliper rebuild kits? Do people still rebuild them? Changed a motherload of brakes in my life, but never had to rebuild a caliper. Rebuilt a slave cylinder for a clutch once--Am I going to have to hone the piston cylinders? What's involved? Is it worth it? Is it easier to just replace the caliper? If so--new part or junkyard time? Any oldtime brake gurus out there?

caliper rebuild kits are becoming rather hard to come by, to be safe, I'd just replace the caliper altogether.

Replace the rubber brake line hose too!

Safe? Who said anything about safe? Safe is for little boys and old women. Posit a question--my old '79 F150 (yes, I am that old) had a brake differential valve about mid-body--had a needle valve in it that had to be held out while bleeding. Do modern brakes still have this? Could this be part of the culprit in the difficulty in forcing dual pistons back (and I know if you only push one piston...it forces the other one out) Do they still have that valve?

You can pick up re built calipers from your local parts store for around $40.
